Y'know ... to be honest ... this is the RIP thread. If you were not a fan of the dead person then say little, or say nothing.
A controversial man, even in his homeland & he really 'died' 8 years ago.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I'm with bobo... this is not, as you rightly say, the politics thread. ( I'd also point out that 1920's was hardly an arbitrary decade I'd chosen - it was the decade the person we were referencing was born in.Lord Kangana wrote:This isn't the politics thread, but what were the birth rates before, lets pluck an arbitrary figure out of thin air, say 1920 and the British Mandate of Palestine, and its avowed aim to create a homeland for the Jews?

That's not a leopard!

Re: This weeks RIP's........
Being British, I object to this hyperbole on a point of personal privilege. Although the British Isles had been inhabited for many millennia, the British should refer to the Celtic people living there. Although they only got the name British after the Roman invasions in the first century BCE, archaelogical evidence shows them to have been there around from at least the first millennium BCE. Therefore I would argue that the 'British' existed from that point. What of the Jews? Well, there were no Jews until old Abraham made his covenant with God apparently around 1900 BCE, and moved from Mesopotamia to Canaan (which was an Egyptian colony at this time). Indeed many of the Jews were actually hauled off to Egypt proper for some time. The two kingdoms of Israel and Judah only came into existence in around 1200 BCE with the collapse of Egyptian hegemony and, if we believe the Bible, the Jewish Exodus from Egypt. It is true that the British entry as a power on the world stage had to wait a few years, but we certainly existed at the time Palestine became a homeland. Harumph!Lost Leopard Spot wrote:I'm with bobo... this is not, as you rightly say, the politics thread. ((and also Palestine was a homeland for the Jews millenia before the 'British' existed)).

Alexandra Bastido. Sadly passed away following a long illness yesterday aged 67. The very glamorous female member of a team of 'Euro Super Slueths', in the late 60's, early 70's series 'The Champions'. Dad's around the country used to drool after her when the programme was aired on a sunday afternoon following the footy on ITV and two hours spent in the pub. Or was that just my house?....

I'd placed that original post in the Angry thread in late 2012. Again, I'm not angry - just in tears. The guy I mentioned, above, was operated on shortly after my initial post and all went well. He even started back at work in the summer of last year and was making excellent progress. Then, around October his and everyone else's worst fears were confirmed. The cancer had returned and was now inoperable.Bruce Rioja wrote:Not angry, just very sad indeed. One of the guys that I deal with in Denmark has over time become something of a good mate. Always makes sure that I'm more than well looked after when I'm over there, I even got to take him to the Masters last year. Well, he's been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and, at best, well, it's not looking good. He's the same age as me.
I've just received the call to say that this evening, in Herning Hospital and surrounded by his loved ones, my friend Svend finally lost his battle. He was 47.
RIP Svend.

Very sorry to hear that Bruce. It's only small consolation I know but just think how lucky you are to have known him.

Christ that's no age. Really sorry to hear that Bruce.
A colleague of mine finished work the other week. Quite a bit older than your friend he's just recently been diagnosed with lung cancer and the prognosis is not good. His main hope was chemo but it triggered a mini stroke and it had to be stopped. In the middle of all this and he and his Mrs trying to come to terms with all that was happening, their long troubled son committed suicide last week.

Thanks All. It's been one of those situations whereby you know you're going to get the call at some point, you're just not ready for it when it comes.

I'm really sorry, Bruce.
I've been attending too many funerals of friends in the last two years - one only last week. It's a very bleak time.

These last two months have been horrendous here as well - so many deaths of friends, relatives and colleagues. I can't remember a worse period.William the White wrote:I'm really sorry, Bruce.
