What is the red thing?Made me smile. The "red thing" is a footbridge over a river and the general theme is the arrival of spring and melting snow.

TANGODANCER wrote:Would have thought it self explanatory. Impressionism is just that, and it isnt a complicated work, therefore "simple", ie an uncomplicated attempt at impressionist painting. ?thebish wrote:Tango - out of interest, what do you mean when you say it is a "simple impression painting"?
oh - ok... I don't think it is at all self-explanatory... I don't think that Impressionism means painting with a lack of detail... (also I have never seen it shortened to "impression painting") - it's much more than that.
I think impressionism is more about the depiction of light, the ordinariness of the subject matter (ie. not a royal portrait or a complex allegorical scene from greek mythology) and often the depiction of movement...
impressionism is not lack of detail or badly painted - it's summat much more complex, isn't it?

It's not far off the title of the 'first' impressionist painting (or, rather, the one that gave rise to the name of the movement).thebish wrote: (also I have never seen it shortened to "impression painting") - it's much more than that.

Well, I'm glad to see my daub causing such comment and controversy. Mummy tries to see it as what was intended, actually likes it, Bruce feels it needs a four letter word, Monty thinks it's a train and the bish feels I need a lecture on what impressionism is all about. Wow. You'd almost think we were on the art thread instead of amateur hackers corner.

not really - all i asked was what you meant by it - which seems to have upset you for some reason. You seem to mean "not detailed" - which isn't what I think is at the heart of it.. that's all.
do you not display your works with some expectation of comment??

to the casual reader, Tango - you don't sound happy...
there could be lots to say about your latest offering - but I suspect you'd get all upset again and label it all a "lecture"...

You are no more an art expert than I am mate and in no position to lecture on the topic. As I said, if you wish to comment,( on the painting) feel free...I'm not in an unhappy mood, it's Christmas.

It is after the manner of Monet - The Japanese water gardens at Giverny or the like. It shows a Japanese style footbridge over a pond with plants around the pond.
I think.

I have seen many of Monet's Japanese bridges and they all rose towards the centre in an arc, not flat like this train.Lost Leopard Spot wrote:I can quite clearly see what it is.Bruce Rioja wrote:What Bruce would like is an answer to his question. It's possibly in the back garden of Mr Ford. The snow's flattened it.Montreal Wanderer wrote:I have seen many of Monet's Japanese bridges and they all rose towards the centre in an arc, not flat like this train.Lost Leopard Spot wrote:I can quite clearly see what it is.Bruce Rioja wrote:What Bruce would like is an answer to his question. Re: The Painting Thread... (as opposed to art debate)
To copy a Turner watercolour anywhere near for somebody at my skill level is practically impossible. Neither is my camera up to class pictures. That said, I'll never own a Turner so I had a go anyway. Top is the original, second without flash( not light enough) and third with flash (too harsh.) Mine is somewhere between the two.
The original picture is classed as "Untitled Watercolour by J.M.W. Turner" and can be found easily on Google Images under Turner Watercolours

Spots. Had a dabble at a still life (in a way). Had no fresh flowers around so I borrowed some from half a dozen flower pics, added a vase of my imagination and this is it.

Tango - I'm curious. What do you do with your finished works? Do you hang them at home?

Right now they're just a colection of paintings for practise. Wife likes the flowers one and thinks I should frame it. I just see it as a hobby/pastime. They're all just in a pile right now till I buy a folder or something to keep them in.Bruce Rioja wrote:Tango - I'm curious. What do you do with your finished works? Do you hang them at home?
