Fortunately, my injury isn't as bad as it could have been - not IT band, piriformis or bursitis which all crossed my mind. Physio reckoned its a bio mechanical thing that resulted in a muscle tear under my hip and running to my pelvis. I've been icing, stretching and cold bathing all weekend. Going to try a 6 mile run tomorrow or Tuesday. If no twinges then I'll be joining you on the starting line albiet with the worst preparation ever! Any twinges or burning sensation and it will be beer in hand cheering you on!

Sincerely hope you make it. Good luck!

Not yet, but not been out since tbf. So what sort of place does one go to, what would one ask for and once one has given ones excuses, where would one go to buy the cheaper version?
Believe it or not - Sports Direct on Middlebrook has an excellent running section. The trainers are colour coded, so if you're a flat-footed-4uckwit like me then you need trainers that are supported in the arch. The three best ever pairs of sports shoes that I've ever bought are Asics running shoes, Lotto football boots and Footjoy golf shoes. Trust me - you'll know exactly where your money's gone.

DON'T run in pub trainers. They're an entirely different animal.
Thanks to all, but once i'm told at Decathlon what I should be wearing, how do I know which are the right shoes to be buying from Tobutt's or Sports Direct? Presumably, if i'm told i'm eg flat footed, do I just go off the colour coding at SD etc?

Couple of my friends did the Brighton marathon today. Friend Kim did it in 3.09 and was 7th lady, Russ ran the first 20 miles in under 2 hours then got injured and took an hour to do the last 6, he was a bit gutted... More friends doing London next week...

Runnings a cheap sport, so it doesn't do any harm to invest a bit of money in the right shoes. If you're not sure, despite others experiences on here, go to Tobbutts or Sweatshop (at David Lloyd in Wheelton) get the best advice and buy your trainers there. It might cost you a bit more but you'll know you've got the right shoes for you.

My plan was to run 30 mins again today but I just gave up after 20, I wasn't tired or anything. Didn't fee worn out when I stopped, just gave up. It seemed a more mental block than anything. Has anyone else experienced this?
Some thoughts...

Try running with a friend to chat to? Listening to music or the radio? Join an athletics club? Set yourself a different goal to work towards? Mix up your training so it's not just a straight run (fartlek or reps up hills etc - an athletics club would do this with you) Park run every Saturday where you'd be embarrassed if you stopped before you finished the 5km?!
Just had a look into those parkruns. Might be a good idea that. Thanks for the tips.

:( Just had to withdraw from London. Managed 6 miles tonight but in a lot of discomfort from mile 3. No point making things any worse but was still a tough decision.

Get your number & colour top on here G and I'll make sure you get an extra cheer mate :pissed:

Sorry to hear that, HG. Hope you recover fully and can get do the business soon. Does withdrawing through injury automatically put you forward for next year or is it a case of tough luck?

And yes, get your number and colour top on here Gary so we can cheer you on!

A real pisser. Sorry to hear that mate. I'll put my number up nearer to the time. Good to know you are able to defer, although you still have to pay again. :|

what happened to all the plans for a new track - are they totally dead now? I thought the olympics were supposed to be good for grass-roots sport...

The plans for ones in Haywards Heath fell through cos buiilding company that promised it backed out.

Theres talk of one maybe in cuckfield and talk of one in Burgess Hill but will believe it when i see it (maybe when the twins are old enough to compete)...

Problem is we have about 4 tracks within half an hours drive - we are in the middle of Brighton, Lewes, Crawley and Horsham (though they are closing Horsham :( ) so we are not deemed a priority area...

Not to interfere in all the huffing and puffing, but talk of running tracks makes me realise just how long Bolton's Levehulme Park ( and indeed Bolton United Harriers) has been going. I ran on that track in school sports and it's still going strong sixty years later.

It's not though, Tango. It's just in the same place. The one you'll have ran on was the old gravel track, the new one is like a foamed rubber. Which brings me onto my question - are the new running tracks better for your knees than the cold, hard streets of the neighbourhood?

Yes, I didn't mean the actual track surface (although I haven't been up there in some while) rather the location and the club. No real idea on the question so I'll pass on that.
