I know, what can I say? But, I've got away with it so far. Unfortunately, Phil, the IT guy, is back tomorrow and when someone from software says he's missing a keyboard, I fear much 1+1ing and questions. :hang:
if he comes asking - ask him if he's tried turning it off and on again - then it might reappear...

Tell him it was just on your desk and you assumed IT had found one.

Simples.

Can you tell I've done this sort of thing before ?

Why because I am tall and a bit dim. No I haven't ever had any ambition to do ballet nor do I see myself as poirot.

So that he can come on here telling us what a 'shithole' the Lviv Theatre is, of course.

Trying to get used to varifocal lenses. They're knocking me sick!

Stick with them, Bruce. I had the same reaction and was convinced they had been manufactured to the wrong prescription. It took a couple of weeks and I wouldn't be without them now.

Exactly what I've been thinking all morning, Clapton. Many thanks for the advice. Truly appreciated.

I got progressive lenses earlier this year and they took a week or so to get used to. Wearing my old specs feels weird now, so you do get used to them. It was being told I need them that finally made me feel like an old fart :|

I wear lenses ... normally from 8am till midnight.

I tried out varifocal ones last year but the improvement was very marginal for the extra £10pm.

I've brought my old specs along as back-up (bad move, I'm now told), but am persevering with the newuns and they are becoming a little easier.

Wife first got varifocals when Dennis Taylor snooker specials were in style. Wouldn't be without them. She also says the initial odd feeling will soon pass. Stick with it.

I have never worn glasses for distance but for the last 15 years or so I have worn magnifiers for reading (non- prescription but good ones from the drugstore) for reading and the computer. I have begun to realize that my distance vision is no longer quite so sharp and perhaps I should get a prescription. There seem three possibilities - get a second pair for distance to use as needed, get bifocal or variable focal glasses, or get contact lenses and keep using the the magnifiers (which i would with option 1). What is the best approach for a pensioner getting distance glasses for the first time?

The best approach, Monty, is always to go and get your eyes tested professionally and get the correct advice, in my opinion.

Well, I would naturally do that but they tend to lay out the options as I did and say it is a matter of preference once they've established the level of correction. I should ask you about these variable things in a couple of weeks....

Hmmm, mine's good at advising me as to what I need in relation to the things that I do. It's also a good thing to let them have a look behind your eyes just so they can see that there's nothing deeper lying. Yes, no problem, I'll let you know how I get on with these in a couple of weeks.

It all comes down to lifestyle.

For example in this country if you are driving and are both short and long sighted you might not be legal with simply distance specs if you then can't read the speedometer and dashboard warnings unaided as necessary.

Bifocals or varifocals are good in that respect but as Bruce is finding out do take some getting used to. Most people do adjust but as ever a few won't.

Contacts might be tricky if you've never worn them before at all and possibly don't offer you many benefits unless you don't want to wear glasses for some reason!

But as Bruce says specialist advice is best.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll put myself in the hands of the pros.

As a golfer I was always a very long, if not accurate, hitter - 300 yard drives were not uncommon in favourable conditions. When I played again a couple of years ago after a lengthy absence from the game I crushed my first drive and remarked "Well, at least I can still hit it out of sight!" However, when I paced off the drive at 225 yards, I realized that the parameters for "out of sight" had changed and I should be thinking about an eye test.
