Re: The Painting Thread... (as opposed to art debate)
Stuck this in here because, well this is the painting thread. Watched Part Two of The Big Paint Challenge tonight and the police artist was the one to leave. He wasn't bad, but the comments were fair. Some of the contestants are quite good and it's going to get tougher on them as it goes on. The young girl and the bloke from Glasgow seem best so far.
Can be watched here for anyone interested:

I think I have decided that the young girl will win... she's hands down the best! her self portrait was stunningly good - and she had by FAR the best of the celebrity portraits.
the woman who went landscape and made a complete horlicks of the job - tiny body - huge hands - massive fat head - she wasn't impressed with the feedback she got!
also - is it possible to have a more short/tall contrast in presenters than Una Stubbs and Richard Bacon?? in most of the shots he is stooping to stay in shot and she is standing on her tip-toes in order to get her head past his waist band!

I know its totally wrong to judge the artists rather than their work and I try very hard to do that, but the Horlicks woman is very superior and full of herself. I almost knew the copper was going out because he had little artistic flair. Concentrating on things like the lamp, chair and books when painting a portrait showed that. He tried to paint a picture rather than a portrait, and you can only get away with that if the portrait dominates. For a police artist his self-portrait was comically bad. I agree the young girl's celebrity portrait was stunningly good and she just needs a bit more confidence in herself. She and the Glasgow chap are a clear cut above the others, at least so far.
Must be a horrible job deciding who goes home, a good reason to stick with the quality of the work and not let the show turn into an X Factor format with sob stories etc having any bearing on things. That's my worry with a Una Stubbs type working the angles.(Incidentally, the artist they interviewed who painted the Royals was absolutely brilliant, was she not?)

I'm not surprised she wasn't impressed!

Her portrait of the two Princes was exceptional. I wasn't massively impressed with the one of Brenda tbhTANGODANCER wrote:^^

Decided to have a go at the B.B.C Small Paint Challenge for amateurs. Rules are the work must be original and on a postcard size 5.8 x 4.1 ( the photo below is bigger than my actual picture). Can't go for anything religious or ethnic, so I went for a Manchester theme with an L.S.Lowry sketch. Probably won't get anywhere, but if you don't have a go, you'll never know. Wish me luck..

Re: The Painting Thread... (as opposed to art debate)
Just caught up with Episode Three of The Big Painting Challenge on BBCi player. Right out of the blue they sent not one, but two contestants home this week. Rotten for the losers, but I think the judges got it right. The young lass and the Glasgow chap are still out in front for me, but the mild army lad is pretty decent although he tends to get a bit over-detailed for me.
The head-mistress type is a bit annoying, but she can draw and paint. I think they'll be the last four.
Programme's here if anybody's interested: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... still-life" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: The Painting Thread... (as opposed to art debate)
Entries for the B.B.C Little Painting Challenge are unlimited. Just have to be original and postcard size. I put six together ( might or might not submit them all, but in the over 16 beginner class I'm having a go for fun.) These are my entries. The colours, as ever from my camera are miles from the originals, but they give the general idea:
