I'm not 100% sure why - I think it dates back to some mad mullah decreeing it somewhere - and it kinda caught on...Lost Leopard Spot wrote:Why?thebish wrote:(i think it's disagree with pru day!)

Mad mullahs don't exist, unless you are female and from Africa..thebish wrote:I'm not 100% sure why - I think it dates back to some mad mullah decreeing it somewhere - and it kinda caught on...Lost Leopard Spot wrote:Why?thebish wrote:(i think it's disagree with pru day!)

It's not the United Kingdoms of Great Britain and NI. I get what your saying that historically it comes from two kingdoms and they were England and Scotland but there are *not* two kingdoms in the equation, and weren't from that Act of the Union point on. There is one, and the clue is in the name. And now it includes Northern Ireland too (and all sorts of other bits here and there).Lost Leopard Spot wrote:You are missing several points... by miles. There will be no United Kingdom of anything. The only kingdoms in the equation are Scotland and England.Prufrock wrote:So you agree with me? On what 'Britain' is anyway.
IIRC, 'Eire' is not a nation. It's quite specifically 'Ireland', not 'Eire' or 'The Republic of Ireland'. There were a lot of people who gave a massive shit about this, for some reason.
I'm f*cked if I know what the difference between 'nation' and 'country' is if 'nation' doesn't mean 'nation state', in which case England (even inc Wales) is not a 'nation'.
It seems we agree they couldn't call it the 'UK of Great Britain...' anymore as Scotland is part of Great Britain. And argue all you like about Wales' status, but good luck getting 'The UK of England and Northern Ireland' to fly!
A country is a place that has international status as an entity. A nation is a country that is recognised as an independent and sovereign entity by the UN.
You're coming at it from your own interpretation of what the name should be from what you think all these different things mean, which is fine, but I'm saying that's got f*ck all to do with how any name would be decided. There'll be a big politcal cluster-f*ck as different folk fight for the recognition they think they deserve. What I am convinced of though is that it'd end up being 'The United Kingdom of Something'. There's far too much shit we've got printed already that says the 'UK' on it, for a start. Plus politically they're going to want to stress that everyone is still together blah blah. You might argue that the name would be *wrong* somehow, but no-one in charge of it is going to be giving a toss about traipsing back and deciding what technically is or isn't a Kingdom.

I'll bet one million quid that if Scotland become independent then the UK will be toast and United Kingdom will not feature in the name of the nation.

↑↑↑↑ & you a religious worker too. This was your chance to say "look at what came out of my toaster" and proclaim it a miracle. The church and, indeed Torbay, would never have looked back.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I think we should go for Great Britain (Excluding Scotland).
Just to make it quite clear.

As for your bet, there's a predictions thread with your name on it IIRC. Put your money where your mouth is (though I don't think it'll happen anyway).

Spose it would be a cheap laugh to tell the Welsh we only stayed with them for Scotland. Now she's left home we want them out. And sacking off Norn Iron might save a lot of hassle in the long run.

Gets my vote .... & "two can play at this game" ... I'll be arranging the border countries to have a vote on whether they want to be in England or Wales. The old Clwyd and Monmouthshire would vote England for sure.Prufrock wrote:Spose it would be a cheap laugh to tell the Welsh we only stayed with them for Scotland. I tried to tell Victoria that all that sticking union jacks all over the place and telling folk they were English would come back and bite us in the ass one day, but she wasn't amused.

Hoboh's brain must be slowly imploding at all this talk. We must have our own nation well away from European meddling, but when someone else wants their own nation well away from us...? Treasonous!
