And the snowflake/appeaser season continues!
A law student is under investigation by his university after allegedly mocking ISIS on social media and 'putting minority students at risk and in a state of panic'.
Robbie Travers is being probed by Edinburgh University amid claims he committed a 'hate crime', despite no criminal investigation by the police.
The 21-year-old third-year student wrote a Facebook post after the US Air Force bombed an ISIS stronghold in Afghanistan in April.
However his comments sparked a complaint from fellow student Esme Allman, who accused him of 'blatant Islamaphobia'.

Mr Travers wrote on Facebook last night: 'Afraid I've been a little more quiet as I have been accused of Islamophobia because I mocked ISIS, and I'm being investigated on such a ground by my University.
'Mocking ISIS allegedly made Islamic and minority students feel 'threatened' and 'unsafe,' so goes the complainant's ramblings.
'Have engaged legal advice to dismiss this nonsense. Wish me luck.'

Ms Allman identifies herself online as 'a self-proclaimed feminist and womanist from inner-city London'.
She adds: 'I value inclusivity as well as building and preserving safe spaces for us. :lmfao: Creating a truly intersectional campaign is incredibly important to me and my first job will be to work alongside the other liberation groups to ensure EUSA are fully representative of our views.
'Here at Edinburgh I want BME Students to engage in conversations about the issues that affect us.'

Probably getting near the time we sift through these Uni's and kick out ail the blatant 'waste of space' types.

Robbie Travers describes himself as an "Arch-Blairite" on his twitter. He's a big ol' Tony fan.

Glad you're going into bat for him Hobes.

Mind I do like his long flowing locks. He's posted online what he admits to be "inflammatory controversial opinions". Which in itself isn't a crime (and isn't being treated as a crime) but may well breach some of his University's rules. I think it is an over-reaction but on reading further does sound like he was deliberately trying to provoke - seeing as he and that woman had history in terms of previous "clashes".

The whole thing on both sides is ridiculous and the University should stay out of it as far as possible. Though they aren't going to stand for the content of his original tweet being widely associated with their brand. As any self respecting business wouldn't.

Literally nobody comes out of that story well. Dickheads.

And what's the difference between a feminist and a womanist FFS?

Yep. A Tory boy deliberately winding up loony leftists for the backlash. That is literally all that is happening here.

The University should have stayed out as far as possible. None of them look good.

As a "cough" impersonal observer,"cough" it might seem to me that this womamist/feminist (what an odd title to give oneself whilst preaching equality for all?) is absolutely hammering her own views home with an hydraulic jack-hammer and almost stating she'll rule the world, yet yon chappie shes's battling isn't allowed to voice an opinion? Bit of an unbalanced seesaw I'd think? Back in pre-nanny state days, she might have been told.......

I've just had a bit of a to-do with a colleague of mine, who's an argumentative nice person at the best of times, who's just accused me of having another 'Gungah Din' moment. He can 4uck off.

Let me explain. Last week I was working abroad. Before I went we had a mail to say that the new Head of IT would be starting whilst I was away.
So, today, this chap walks into our office. I stand up and say to him "Hi, you must be the new IT bloke, I'm Bruce". The argumentative nice person then said to me "Ha, you've just had another Gungah Din moment in that you immediately assumed he's the new Head of IT because he's Asian".

No I haven't. I've assumed that because the guy isn't being chaperoned, nor does he have a visitors badge on, that he works here. In that I've never seen the guy before I've assumed that he's new here. Being as the only position to come up recently is that of Head of IT, and that the recipient of said position was due to take up the role last week - I've assumed that this is him.

I'm 4ucking bristling just now!

I'm sure a little violence that doesn't leave a mark and not in view of anyone else might assuage your bristle :)

Failing that tippexing the word 'nice person' on his bonnet might also do the trick.

A useful reply might have been "Doesn't the end of Kipling's poem say: "By the living God that made you, you’re a better man than I am, Gunga Din!" ....Just a thought...

Yes. However, I've just had a mail off him and he seems to fancy himself as 'Senior Business Analyst". Oh really?

She's not putting inflammatory stuff on social media though. Or at least not as far as we know. If you are putting stuff on there in the vein that bloke was, well you expect some problems with that. As he clearly did. He knew what he was doing.

I'd be tempted to send the judge for treatment. Hope I never have to have an op with milady incharge of the guillotine.

Or a working class bloke to boot.

To be fair the reasons the judge lays out aren't exactly what the headline implies. However, I do feel that it is a clear case of one rule for some and one for others.

Can't see that they've even published the sentencing remarks yet. Press are appalling at reporting what goes on in court (as with science, the reporters don't have the specialist knowledge) so I'll be waiting for those before I pass judgement.

Doesn't seem unreasonable to me. What is unfair, is that she is disproportionately likely to get the help she needs with her addiction, mental illness and trauma.

It is massively crucial to look at these things outside the glare of headlines and stories written with an agenda (as every single press story is).

Do you think though that she is disproportionately advantaged with this sentence over say a 30 year old bloke who got drunk and had a fight with his flatmate and stabbed him with a breadknife? I mean its hard to imagine a suspended sentence then. But perhaps I'm wrong....

If it was a 30 year old bloke, with the same mitigating factors (victim of DV, an addict, first time offender) then I think probably. Sentencing is far more mathematic and rigid than I think the general public appreciate. Whenever articles talk about “lax judges” letting people off, what they really ought to be criticising is the sentencing guidelines. It’s a flow chart type exercise. You find the offence, then decide the level of harm and culpability. That gives you a sentencing range. You then consider aggravating and mitigating features (e.g. drunk, used a knife v remorse) to come to a sentence. You then apply a % discount depending on plea (more discount the earlier you plead).

I am sure in some borderline cases, some unconscious bias may push a white girl from Oxbridge into one category and a black guy from a council estate into another, but I really don’t think it happens that often.

“The Secret Barrister” has a really good blog on popular legal issues like this and has updated his piece on this case here: https://thesecretbarrister.com/2017/09/ ... to-prison/
