Re: The athletics/running thread
Was supposed to be doing the Calderdale Way relay tomorrow but due to cry offs, I ended up doing the Belmont-Winter Hill fell race this afternoon instead. So glad I did. It was about 5 miles long with 2 ridiculous climbs in and 1 hair raising descent with lots of boggy ground underfoot.
I was delighted with my time and no injuries picked up other than a couple of tweaks and twists on the ankles. Came home very tired and very muddy but loved it. I'd almost forgotten how great fell running is

Great that you had no injuries too. When's your next race?

But running a marathon with a fractured bone in your back is what normal people do?!Gary the Enfield wrote:Harry Genshaw wrote:Was supposed to be doing the Calderdale Way relay tomorrow but due to cry offs, I ended up doing the Belmont-Winter Hill fell race this afternoon instead. I didn't know it was broken. It just hurt a little bit.Gooner Girl wrote:But running a marathon with a fractured bone in your back is what normal people do?!Gary the Enfield wrote:Harry Genshaw wrote:Was supposed to be doing the Calderdale Way relay tomorrow but due to cry offs, I ended up doing the Belmont-Winter Hill fell race this afternoon instead. I love running this time of year. There are loads of road and fell races through the summer evenings - much more fun than a speed session at the track

Re: The athletics/running thread
Need to get a couple of runs in this week ahead of this weekend's 90 mins on a full-sized pitch for the first time in ooooooooh, 10 years or so.
As Hermes so kindly pointed out in another place - that's gonna hurt!

Oh yes indeed.
This week I have a 10k road race in Stevenage (inter club)
Sunday is Bedford Sprint Triathlon
I've just entered for Hatfield Broad Oak 10k on the Jubilee weekend.
Taking advantage of my current Marathon fitness.

I rested before the marathon. That's what did for me. No I'm fine to run. If it hurts, I'll stop. Probably.Bruce Rioja wrote:Errrm, aren't you supposed to be resting up with your broken whatnot, young man?Gary the Enfield wrote:Bruce Rioja wrote:Need to get a couple of runs in this week ahead of this weekend's 90 mins on a full-sized pitch for the first time in ooooooooh, 10 years or so.

Re: The athletics/running thread
I've kinda gone to pot since the marathon. It's like there's no meaning any more. Drinking and smoking like a chimney. Tried to run on saturday and it was embarrasing. Like trying to start an old car. Nothing seemed to work.
I really need to enter something else (not a marathon. Yet) to kick my arse in gear. Football season is done after May and so it'll just be cricket for the summer that'll keep me doing physical activity. Just need the will and time to get another 10km done.

It's very common to lose your sense of purpose after the Marathon
The trick is to just book a race and your focus will return. As for the smoking.

Okay, so Stevenage MWRRL 10k done. 45.23 whichis disappointing but some people were saying it was 200m too long which could account for about 45 seconds. Need to work on my hills.

In terms of fitness etc., and ignoring personal preferences, is it any different running 5k on a treadmill as opposed to on the road?

Depends how hilly the roads are and what condition they are in - but generally i would say not a lot!Wandering Willy wrote:In terms of fitness etc., and ignoring personal preferences, is it any different running 5k on a treadmill as opposed to on the road?

Re: The athletics/running thread
OK - anyway attempting a 5k in the gym this afternoon. Did 2.5 k yesterday after a full (90 min) workout with no problems. Actually I have been doing a lot of bike work in the gym and it seems to have paid off as I felt great running and not out of breath at all. Ran at a pace of 11k/hr.
I am starting again on the treadmill as where I run is very hilly and I am worried this will put too much strain on my ankle.

Well done Willy, sounds like a wise move staying in the gym til your angle has healed a bit more.Wandering Willy wrote:OK - anyway attempting a 5k in the gym this afternoon.
