One thing that's always puzzled me with the French language. When something new appears on the scene (Internet, micro chip technology etc) - who decides whether it's feminine or masculine? Do folk wander round using La & Le until general usage decides?

How the word is spelled or how it sounds is a clue, but not infallible. These things are decided by the lexicographers who create the Dictionnaire de L'Académie francaise.. As you can tell an academy is feminine, though most members are male.

Everybody thinks La radio in Spanish sounds odd because radio ends in "o" which is masculine, although everybody uses it. Reason is radio in Spanish is actually radiotelefonica, which is feminine. Just one of those little quirks. El agua is another, because la agua (correct) just sounds odd when pronounced.

At what point did society collapse to the extent that we need adverts reminding people not to smuggle drugs?

I was thinking maybe nobody had got it. But yes that was the day when the heathen hordes not only overthrew the last Western Roman Emperor, but had a little toke of Cimmerian Black in celebration...

Presumably because there weren't radio adverts warning it not to do.

I don't know about the drugs but that Emperor (a usurper) was forced to abdicate by a general in the Roman army who support the legitimate Emperor who had been usurped. True the general, Odoacer, was a German, but so was most of the high command of the Roman army. He was also a Christian. So drugs maybe, heathen hordes no.

He, Odoacer, might have been a Christian, but believe me, his hordes - Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Alans, Vandals, Franks, Burgundians, Scythians, Huns, Lombards and other associated wronguns, were, to a man, heathens...
