I've eaten half-a-dozen Polo mints and only been out in the rain twice. Wonder if the House of Commons smoking room is now banned and all the MP's who smoke are out there suffering it?. Bet the inmates of all the prisons are laughing their frocks off today.

Great, isn't it this wonderful society we Brits now live in, criminals are allowed to break a law of the land and the law-abiding get fined for the same thing. Yeah....

No exemption for the Palace of Westminster, Tango:
'While the Act does not formally apply on the parliamentary estate, the Commission, on the advice of the Administration Committee, has decided that the House should comply with the principles of the legislation, as it is not desirable that those who work on or visit the parliamentary estate should be treated differently in this respect than in other workplaces and public places.

The Commission recognises, however, that many who work on the estate are unavoidably present for long periods, particularly when the House is sitting. It is therefore desirable to make reasonable provision for those who wish to smoke to do so, provided that the health and safety of other users of the estate is not adversely affected............has decided that smoking should cease to be permitted from 1 July 2007 in all internal areas of the House of Commons estate, including in bars and private offices.

From that date smoking will, however, be permitted in four designated external areas: the Terrace, Commons Court (North West corner), North Terrace (between Portcullis House and Norman Shaw South), and in a designated area on the west side of Canon Row courtyard. Cigarette receptacles will be provided in these areas. "No Smoking" signs will be displayed at entrances to the buildings.'

Potentially useful information for any snipers out there

Smoking's been banned at Casa Barnet since the Barnettas came along near six years ago. Me and Mrs B have been braving the elements ever since, it doesn't half cut down on yer intake when you can't just flip the top. Will make for foot-to-foot hopping in the pub, though.

Plenty of self-policing in evidence yesterday which was a refreshing surprise - good to notice that people were given a small allowance at Leigh rugby yesterday with stewards escorting the odd smoker to an open air section of the ground away from other spectators.

Goin to nip to my local tonight just to see if I can restrain myself from smoking while having a couple of pints; I've avoided alcohol so far.

I bet there'll be no f#cker in there...

Went in my local for a few last night and could actually smell the beer. It was weird. I accepted defeat and quit a couple of months ago, so the ban is only going to help me, but I disagree with it on principle.

Wonder what all the self-righteous, anti-smoking cry babies will winge about next?

I don't know, but I suppose I'll be one of them... I think we should target either crown green bowlers as a safety risk or the homeless as a public nuicence..

I must say that it was nice to go for a pint last night and not come home with my clothes and hair stinking of smoke - hail to the anti-smoking fascists as far as I'm concerned!

I friend of mine went to Dublin. She said that the outside streets were just full of fag ends. She said it was quite f#cking filthy; litter everywhere.

Its going to be a weird few weeks in the local pubs while people become accustomed. I just wonder what next weekend is going to be like when everyone hits the town to get pi$$ed. They'll be plenty of boozed up lads and lasses willing to flaunt the law and start a bit of trouble.

What about the aged? Surely it will take us twice as long to smoke a cigarette as young people therefore extending the time the smoke is in the air. Ban the elderly, and while you're at it those dominoes are very loud, get rid of dominoes.

Agreed. And those tatty shopping basket trolleys they drag behind them... I'm sure they are the reason for all the cracked pavements.

I totally agree.
Went out last night and got up today without me or my clothes reeking of smoke.

No one is taking away anyones "Right" to smoke.
Just asking you to do it somewhere else.

Maybe it didn't click DD, the "somewhere else"'s all just ceased to be an option.

Only 48 hours and the reek has gone? What do they smoke up there candy fags? I can still smell my local and they had it deep cleaned over the weekend. Probably come home smelling of BO and farty stuff now. 8)

One argument I keep hearing in favour of the ban is that pubs will now be far more pleasant for people to take children into. Is this meant to be a good thing? The last thing I want, when I go for a pint, is a room full of mewling f*&^ing brats. I'd rather have a room full of smoke. And I'm a non-smoker.

Answer:
Backgammon wrote:friend of mine went to Dublin. She said that the outside streets were just full of fag ends. She said it was quite f#cking filthy; litter everywhere.
Now we're the new street people, if it increases litter in public places (streets) rather than private (pubs), you may see councils imposing on-the-spot littering fines to anyone chucking a dog-end. Hey, it'll be unpopular, but it'll be lucrative, and the majority will quietly acquiesce if it keeps their own tax bill down.
