the last two didgits don't always directly relate to engine size on BMWsIdiot Wind wrote:enfieldwhite wrote:Idiot Wind wrote:The MX5 has fantastic handling and is fun to drive.
I agree with Commie though, it's not a sports car and certainly not the best roadster. The Honda S2000 is better for a start. The noise at 7/8000 revs is unbelievable.
I drive a 323i SE at the moment, on a '99 plate. An old car but f*ck me can it shift. It was badged as a 323 despite having a 2.5L engine - summat to do with wanting to differentiate from the 328. I know, makes no sense to me either!!!
That's just random words, surely!
My cars got 5 wheels (including steering) and goes where I drive it. Functional tool. (not you, commie, the car)![]()
The 3 stands for 3 series and the rest usually denotes the engine size i.e. a 323 would have a 2.3L engine. However, on this particular model the engine size is actually 2.5L.

They used to though. I think the '99 323 was the first to buck the trend. They brought revised engines out and wanted to differentiate from the ones on the market at the time.communistworkethic wrote:the last two didgits don't always directly relate to engine size on BMWsIdiot Wind wrote:enfieldwhite wrote:Idiot Wind wrote:The MX5 has fantastic handling and is fun to drive.

Never realised how much car tax goes up with engine size either!!! Robbing nice people!

I like that model of the Astra. My dad had an S reg Sport version - used to love driving it.Soldier_Of_The_White_Army wrote:

Whilst you were listening to it, did you care to actually take a look at the S2000? It's utterly shapless mediocrity.Idiot Wind wrote:The MX5 has fantastic handling and is fun to drive.

Commie, I don't doubt you're a Top Gear bore. How does Clarkson describe the MX5 in this review?

Do you think so? I don't mind it myself. I'm not overkeen on the new style MX-5 in truth though.50sQuiff wrote:Whilst you were listening to it, did you care to actually take a look at the S2000? It's utterly shapless mediocrity.Idiot Wind wrote:The MX5 has fantastic handling and is fun to drive.

Style wise I really like the Lotus Elise although they're wholly impractical as it's like sitting inside a tin can.
I went on the VXR launch at Ellesmere Port in 2005 and got to drive the VX220 Turbo, now that is a machine! Absolutely and utterly bonkers. You couldn't have it as an every day car if you do anything more than a few miles as it's the same problem as the Elise, just no comforts whatsoever. If I could afford a 'weekend' car though that would be the one!

I'm not so keen on the new MX5 for the same reasons I dislike the S2000. It's like an MG, just a bar of soap. I'm with you on the Elise, which is anything but characterless. It's on my notional 'next car' list

Ah the 501. Does it still go up near Barrow Bridge or have they stopped that altogether? (Or am I making that up???)TANGODANCER wrote:Just dreaming. Still does Moss Bank Way but goes all aroung the house to get there, via Farnworth. Used to be No 1 Moss Bank, No3, Rushey Fold Lane and N04 Barrow Bridge, but that was a fair while ago.Idiot Wind wrote:

a 1.8l is no sports car unless what you're driving weighs the same as a slighlty overweight bluebottle. Lotus Elise, Vauxhall VXR, caterham 7, aerial atom these are sports cars.50sQuiff wrote:Whilst you were listening to it, did you care to actually take a look at the S2000? Oh and if you want to pull TG as evidence try one that was broadcast in the last 10 years, that was an R reg. If you get something more recent you'll find they specifically say it's not a sports car.
