You might find that amusing, AT, but actually it might mean just that. The airline has an obligation to provide reasonable comfort and this is assessed when you check in. I don't know how tall you are of course but if exceptionally lofty they might have to give you a bulkhead seat or upgrade to business class.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Does this mean I get a free upgrade to business class because my legs don't fit in economy seats? I mean, it's not my fault I grew so tall is it?

The most hideous journey of my life was when I basically had to share half of my seat with the most horrendous, sweating mound of blubber on Earth, on a flight from Chicago. She had to place her right shoulder blade across my left collar bone for the entire flight.
Mmmmmm and I'm starting to go a little grey.

I generally try to make light of it as it is a big problem for me and any other approach just gets me angry at airlines. I've had to stand up most of the way from San Francisco to the UK before because I didn't fit in the seat. Not a case of no legroom, with knees painfully wedged into the seat infront my backside didn't touch the seat, only my thighs. The worst flight I've had but most of them aren't a great deal better. I have the same problem on buses and trains. Half the time the airline staff try to be helpful the rest of the time they don't give a shitMontreal Wanderer wrote:You might find that amusing, AT, but actually it might mean just that. PS - I'm 6'5" but with long legs and the San Fran flight was United - never fly with them again

Fortunately, or unfortunately, our legislation only applies to Canadian carriers who have an obligation to take reasonable steps to ensure passenger comfort. Of course if they fail to do so you have to complain to get compensation. Charging double in planes that were not full was viewed as unreasonable. I am not sure of what American legislation may be. Seems to me they should give tall people two seats so they can sit sideways a little if they cannot give them a bulkhead or upgrade - still you would have to state your case at check-in.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:I generally try to make light of it as it is a big problem for me and any other approach just gets me angry at airlines. The airline would probably argue that, whilst you are FREAKISHLY tall, you are disproportianately slim and so the area you occupy in cubic feet would be the same as a NORMAL person.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:I generally try to make light of it as it is a big problem for me and any other approach just gets me angry at airlines. Yes, obviously it it down to your diet.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Does this mean I get a free upgrade to business class because my legs don't fit in economy seats? I mean, it's not my fault I grew so tall is it?
Had you eaten lots of fatty unhealthy foods, then the downward pressure of your gut would have prevented you growing to 9' 7". You would probably have been three times as fat though (so should be able to get an upgrade due to the obesity thing) ..

Lots of people about my height or thereabouts. Thats the thing, the minimum legroom for a seat should be a good 38" pitch rather than the 28-34" that seems to be the average. In premium economy I can fit and have about an inch to move my knees. Still not brilliant but at least someone of a not too uncommon height can fit in there. As for being thin, it's that super healthy lifestyle of beer, tabs and mountains of food that does it for meenfieldwhite wrote:The airline would probably argue that, whilst you are FREAKISHLY tall, you are disproportianately slim and so the area you occupy in cubic feet would be the same as a NORMAL person.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:I generally try to make light of it as it is a big problem for me and any other approach just gets me angry at airlines.
