Many an interesting point made in jest, by the way....William the White wrote:Everyone registered to vote in Scotland may vote.Bruce Rioja wrote:Somethings I was wondering -
Thing 1 - Do Scots living outside of Scotland get to vote?
Thing 2 - Do non-Scots living in Scotland get to vote?
No one else.
I look at that menu and think it would be nice if Bolton could apply to join Scotland.
A Scottish friend of mine is fairly passionately pro-independence, largely because he thinks it would result in a government that is significantly further to the left.
It reminds me of a lot of the pro-European stuff I have heard over the years - a lot of it seems to be grounded in the fact that European policy-making is more socialist than that in the UK (apart from health, of course - nowhere does that like we do or try to).
All of which begs the question - should these big, constitutional questions transcend things like the political stripe of the government of the day?

I think it could be a generational thing then. You obviously work with the rational thinkers.Lord Kangana wrote:I think thats a ridiculous sweeping statement Boris. I work now and then with a couple of Scots. Its genuinely a very perplexing issue for them.
There seems to be a bit of a 'movement' up there from the outside looking in mainly driven, not by political and rational reasons, but purely emotional and patriotic reasons.
It could well be biased reporting, but everything I've seen on the news whenever they've spoken to locals seems to point towards a "Och aye, we're Scottish, not British, lets be independent.. Death to King Edward!"

Which, I'd say, is exactly why the whole thing's been rigged to give a vote to sixth form pupils and other children of their age.boltonboris wrote: I think it could be a generational thing then.

You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.

Just to say all polls so far show a very significant lead for the 'No' vote.boltonboris wrote:I think it could be a generational thing then. Including among the under 25s.
And the newly enfranchised 16-18 years old (who, i agree, the SNP cynically wanted to recruit to their campaign).
Re: You take the high road...
Yep, the 'No' vote with a lead even amongst the kiddies. Whilst there are some Scots who hate the English, I don't think that many do. I live with a Scottish girl who very much defines herself as Scottish rather than British, but still isn't particularly pro-independence.
I'm fairly sure results show that the status quo almost always wins out in referenda unless there is a clear case for change made out, with polls befor ehand showing a clear lead. People are scared of change and all that. I don't think that they've got enough to convince people.

In that case then I expect that the No will win easily.William the White wrote:

I was expecting a marginal poll lead for the Yes, with a lot of it anti-English (or at least anti-Westminster) bluster disappearing before the big day.

A cursory glance at the Beeb's coverage would tell you were they stand. Sometimes I think they don't know whether to laugh or throw stuff at Salmond.Lord Kangana wrote:Therein lies a tale in itself.boltonboris wrote: but everything I've seen on the news
He'll need to have more up his sleeve than what he's proffered currently because as it is his team is losing the vote. He also needs to lose those eye-melting tartan trousers.
But this is still a world class photobomb...

That was a petty, cheap little trick from a petty cheap little man.
It served the single purpose of showing him to be the tosser he is.
Would Merkel or Hollande do that ? Of course not. Perfectly reasonable to show pride in the win, but in the end you either have class or you don't.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Most of what Salmond says and does is cringe-inducing, but whatever cringe-inducing to the power of 10 can be called, that was it! What an absolute tosser.bobo the clown wrote:↑↑↑

Also, getting rid of Trident could cost 7000 their jobs(!!). When asked about it, he simply said (paraphrasing, but not much) "erm. there are other things we're exploring in order to keep those people in employment" without so much as expanding on that absolute grenade of a comment.

(yes - I know - I am just teasing william over his poor sentence structure!)
this childcare proposal - they have had the powers necessary to do that for quite some time - the libdem and labour parties in scotland have been urging the SNP do do more on childcare - they have steadfastly refused... it's a bit odd that it now emerges as something they hold as a sacred item of nationalist principle...

polls have shown that the "no" vote is particularly strong among women - women think Salmond is a cock - so, here we go...

Well he is, but I find it interesting that people might cast their vote on an issue as monumental as this based on their view of an individual.thebish wrote:polls have shown that the "no" vote is particularly strong among women - women think Salmond is a cock - so, here we go...

Having met the guy and having heard him correct somebody after being addressed as "Mr Hammond" with: "it's Mr First Minister", I can confirm he IS a cock.thebish wrote:polls have shown that the "no" vote is particularly strong among women - women think Salmond is a cock - so, here we go...

i don't think they will cast their vote based on their view of salmond. what I was saying is that the SNP have rushed out this uncosted plan for free childcare because the polls suggest women are less likely to vote "yes"..
the SNP is dangling something shiny..
all the polls and research I have heard tells the unremarkable and fairly obvious truth - that scots are not stupid and will vote according to whether they think the economic case for an independent scotland is made or not - and that nationalistic jingoism is nowhere near as big a factor in this as the SNP hoped it might be...
