Ah, OK ta. So 'they' have done away with the market element ... a pity as it was pretty sorted after the big refurbishment about 15 years ago.

Nothing compared with the horrors of Regent Street though where the charity shops and £ shops compete with the empty units to give an air of Merthyr Tydfil .... which is itself an improvement on the Beruit Chic of Bradshawgate from Trinity Street to Great Moor Street.

Presently in pub three out of four on a long walk. Dog settled down, everything cool, and in walk a party of four. One of them has Tourettes or something similar - starts fxcking yipping and making inappropriate comments [no swearing, by the way]. Anyway, dog gets upset, starts barking. Landlord asks us to leave. I point out that the bloke is making more noise and upsetting the dog, and suddenly he [Mr Tourettes] can control his stupid noises - just goes to show some people play up their so-called uncontrollable impulses...dog's still poised to have him... One more yip.

It was called the Closed Market when I lived there and there was an Open Market as well. There's a Regent Road but it's in Lostock (or was - who knows what changes have occurred). I don't remember the Closed Market being quite as clean and shiny as your photo...

It was called the Closed Market when I lived there and there was an Open Market as well. There's a Regent Road but it's in Lostock (or was - who knows what changes have occurred). I don't remember the Closed Market being quite as clean and shiny as your photo...

Regent Road's still there, Monty, though it now seems popular amongst builders to buy property on there, knock it down, then build either (a) Something much bigger, or (b) Multiple dwellings on the site.

What I think you refer to as the Closed Market* is known to most as The Market Hall. I think it'll have been similar when you were here as to how it was when I was a kid - quite a dark place with myriad stalls selling all kinds of what-have-you. I remember our Grandad used to take us to one stand that used to sell glasses of sarsaparilla poured from a barrel.

'They' decided to clean it up and do away with many of the stalls as per my picture around 15 years ago (I think). However, they've since created the white elephant that is 'The Market Place' (Grunto's pic).

*I'm wondering also if by 'Closed Market' you mean the undercover section of Asburner St. though.

No, I'm sure the Closed Market is now Market Hall. The main entrance was on Corporation Street. I got my first bike at Halfords whose shop was both ion the Closed market and had an entrance on Knowsley St. The Open Market was up near Black Horse St and Great Moor St. - it was open in the sense that there were large gaps in the main floor walls which werfe always open, but there was a roof. There were many many fish stalls there. It could have been on Ashburner St (was that a deliberate typo? ). If the Open market is now Bolton Market they appear to have put in some walls and windows (I just went there on google and I think it probably is it).
