FWIW, I was fondled by a master at school - many 13 year-olds in my cohort were. We all knew about it and none of us said anything then or later. I imagine it went on for years with this person. I'm not proud of my silence.

What exactly is preposterous about it, I said the quoted, I spoke from actual experience, the Bish chose to tell me differently even though he wasn't born then or lived in my area.Bruce Rioja wrote:Sorry Tango but that an absolutely preposterous remark.TANGODANCER wrote: And you know this, even though you weren't born in the fifties?
Do you know of nothing from before you were born? Carry on.
Pretty obvious I'm talking about my own neighbourhood, and since I was sixteen in 1955 I think I may well have heard about it if there had been. I'd have thought the wordThere was no widespread child rape or sexual molesting among the general public where we lived.
"widespread" would have qualified the statement. I stand by it.

That if you weren't alive at a certain time then you don't know anything about it. Thought the bit I was calling preposterous was clear by dint of me having quoted it. Clearly not, eh?TANGODANCER wrote:What exactly is preposterous about itBruce Rioja wrote:Sorry Tango but that an absolutely preposterous remark.TANGODANCER wrote: And you know this, even though you weren't born in the fifties?

To be fair there have been a lot of things more open now than they were before.
On a quite different aspect I recall a college friend saying "one in 8 people are gay". Well, back in the 1970's you'd be surprised if one in 80 were (openly) so. The prospect that 12% of the population may be was ludicrous to me.
Now, watching most 'reality' TV, most things on the BBC, I'm beginning to think it was a terrible underestimate.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Re: Well, I'd never have thought this ...
I'm not sure there are really accurate statistics on the proportion of gay people. Over here it is estimated to be between 5 and 10%, so less than one in eight. When i was young I don't suppose anyone was openly gay - I think it was a criminal offense, and certainly a cause to lose your job in many work environments. We were taught at school it was the one great unforgivable sin and trained to have a horror at the thought. This prejudice was so deeply ingrained that it took me some 15 years as an adult to get over. Thank God I did get over it, because my life has been richer from having friends who are gay, and transexuals (which we'd never heard of in the 1950s).bobo the clown wrote:To be fair there have been a lot of things more open now than they were before.

Ah, okay. We'll ignore why I said it, and what it related to. Fair enough.Bruce Rioja wrote:That if you weren't alive at a certain time then you don't know anything about it. What it related to was more of your never-in-my-golden-era nonsense. If you'd prefer to believe that child abuse simply didn't exist in the 50's because you didn't know about it, and that anyone that wasn't there at the time isn't in a position to claim otherwise, is up to you of course. Knock yourself out.

He'll end up with a community order; 2 yrs supervision with a sex offender programme requirement and register on the SOR for 10 years minimum. IMO................

Absolute nonsense.TANGODANCER wrote:Gee, I'd love to be around to see what comes out fifty years from now. The only difference is is that it isn't as taboo to report it now.

Apparently Ken Barlow took a 15 year old Escort round to Kev's garage for a touch up, and now it's all kicked-off.
