General take the job back home, your missus will need you with a toddler and a baby and time with family is worth more then money any day. They are only young for such a short time.
Bruce, I'd feel uncomfortable about doing that too. Say no if you can.

Hey, I can put my head-hunter hat on if you're struggling with this. Tell your boss I'll do it ... for a fee.
Which is pretty much a re-hash of what I said. My invoice is in the post.

Bruce - I think I have more issues with dragging the poor lad 400 miles around the country, getting his hopes up on a non-existent job than trying to gain information out of him. I'd also suggest meeting up with him down near to where he lives.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

It's a possibility, Jim Lad, especially as we haven't entered into an NDA, put not a probability. Something I'm guarded against though, sure.Il Pirate wrote:Bruce; are you sure that company B, isn't trying to string you along and find out as much as they can about your intentions & relationship with co' c?

Tell him you'll do it as long as the guy gets put up for the night and gets a meal out of it. That way, he's not going to be too pissed off at the situation.

Might seem a bit sus if he's just gone for a speculative interview and gets 5* treatment though.
I'd be uncomfortable with it. Very uncomfortable.

Have you ever been treated to an overnight + slap-up on the back of applying for a job on spec, Boris?boltonboris wrote:Negotiate with your own boss.Bruce Rioja wrote:Indeed, only Dundee's not somewhere that I'm due to be just passing by anytime soonmalcd1 wrote:I strongly disagree with GtE but fully agree with Bobobobo the clown wrote:Then .... & you can get a nice trip out of this ... It's fair to say I have been 'met lavishly'.Bruce Rioja wrote:Have you ever been treated to an overnight + slap-up on the back of applying for a job on spec, Boris?
If you do it on the "hey, I'm nearby" basis (Edinburgh maybe ?) then he can join you for dinner. C'mon man, be inventive.

As have I, when I've been headhunted. Hardly the same though, is it?! Suppose there are a few ways around it - I'd feel better about driving up there to be honest - see if he fancies a casual round of Golf. Still not easy with building a guy's hopes up though.bobo the clown wrote:It's fair to say I have been 'met lavishly'.

I'd say head up there and go with the nothing available right now, but there might be in the future. Lets chat as I'm near you next week and see how you might fit if an opportunity should arise. Sort of chat/strategy. There is little effort on his part and as you're in the area and you've said nothing available right now, so you're managing his expectations. He'll likely take it as an opportunity for a contact that might help him in the future.Bruce Rioja wrote:As have I, when I've been headhunted. Hardly the same though, is it?! Re: General Chit Chat
Give me a couple of years..........

Re: General Chit Chat
ever started a job to late but had to finish it?
bit dumb - but started to fix roof onto chicken run in anticipation of rainy season...
7 corrugated plastic panels - each 8ft by 3ft...
started the job at 5:20 - still light!
missus calls me in for tea at about 6:20 - half done - one side fixed - but wind starting to get up..
finish my tea- now getting decidedly dark - but there is a wind getting up - and they WOULD blow off!!
just finished... at the end - was banging in nails in the pitch dark - and I simply could not see the nails - had to do it by touch...
heaven knows what it will look like when I go out to inspect it in the morning!
