Well, what a brilliant afternoon! £20 for 4 hours of athletics. My first live meet but defo not my last. If you get chance to go to one - do so. You wont regret it.

I'd just quite like to know...see, I don't normally give a f*ck about athletics. But the Olympics were good. Lots of athletes I'd never heard of did really well. I'd never really followed their sport before, but it was nice to watch for a bit, and I hope they do well in the future. I'm not a big fan, but I'd like them to do quite well again. It was nice. I'm just wondering if my f*ck was a legitimate f*ck. Bish?

It's brill isn't it? Been to crystal palace for diamond league several times (but not Birmingham) saw Usain Bolt run under 10 seconds for the 100m there. Looks from your fb pics that you had a cracking view of the pole vault?! Inspired to take it up now Harry? Do some proper athleticsHarry Genshaw wrote:Well, what a brilliant afternoon! £20 for 4 hours of athletics. My first live meet but defo not my last. If you get chance to go to one - do so. More fun then watching Bolton (or for that matter, Arsenal) play at the moment I should imagine!

Re: The athletics/running thread
Funnily enough, i have done some of my pb's on days when i have done about 7 track and field events and 2 relays in one meet and been racing from one to another. I reckon its because i don't 'think' too much about what i am doing...Harry Genshaw wrote:How dare you!Gooner Girl wrote:It's brill isn't it? The pole vault does fascinate me. I have no idea how folk start training for that, but I wont be attempting it anytime soon. Perhaps steeple chase or high jump. What impressed me yesterday was the non stop events - it was relentless. As soon as something finished on field, they were off again on the track and back & forth all day. I'm tempted to tie one of next years meets with a weekend away -somewhere like Brussels or Rome

Harry's pole vault pictures have inspired me however to apply for the position of women's pole vault crash-mat. Goodness meHarry Genshaw wrote:How dare you!Gooner Girl wrote:It's brill isn't it? Good luck with that.........
Just off for a ten mile run. Great North Run is two weeks away and I've not run more than 8 miles since the Marathon in April.
Wish me luck.........

Good luck! You will be fine - and youre pretty injury free at the mo?!
I did 2 and a half miles yesterday, thought we had gone quite speedily but only 12 seconds faster then the previous week
looking forward to training changing venues in a couple of weeks - prefer running my home village routes to the next village along, less hilly!
Football training in the rain tonight.

Re: The athletics/running thread
Nice one GtE.
Had to run for 12 minutes as fast as we could tonight at training, pleased to say despite my shocking lack of fitness and the fact that I am one of the oldest there
I managed to beat at least half the young 'uns.
Been experimenting with a Nike running app on my iPhone. Rather then calibrating it uses GPS somehow differently so it means your run distances are really accurate. Almost scared to try it in case the distances I thought were about 5km are far less and I'm actually even slower then I thought I was...

Increasing your lactic threshold? I'm doing the same. The idea is to run as far as you can in 12 minutes. This is the point at which lactic acid builds up and becomes painful. Eventually, as your body becomes used to it and you travel further, you increase the time until you're running for 24 minutes.
My coach says by doing this it'll get me to a sub 20 5k.

Sadly it was round and round in a big square on a field in Hassocks. Not so interesting.thebish wrote:Gooner Girl wrote:Nice one GtE.

GtE, i can kind of see the theory behind it though i am not sure our coach was doing it for that specificly, more as a fitness test. The week before we did some fartlek training which is much more appropriate for football IMHO, in a game you don't just jog for 10 minutes you speed down and slow up so i'm not convinced for football how much use it is. Also, i think if you;re serious about playing you should do your fitness work outside of training thenm you can spend all of training using the ball rather then just running.
BUT i'm keeping my mouth shut, am there to train and enjoy, not coach!

doesn't that hamper your running style??Gooner Girl wrote:Sadly it was round and round in a big square on a field in Cassocks. Not so interesting.thebish wrote:Gooner Girl wrote:Nice one GtE.

anyway - good tip about running round in circles/squares rather than a straight line - I'd never have thought of that - which is probably why I am no good at athletics...
