Re: Joke thread
nahhh... "Pedant's Corner" uses "Pedant" as a category of people not a group of individual pedants, hence, singular... (not unlike "the man on the Clapham Omnibus" - this refers to a plural (ordinary people) but is expressed as a singular...)Lost Leopard Spot wrote:*cough* Pedants' corner, please.thebish wrote:maybe - but NOT in pedant's corner!Prufrock wrote:Isn't. Is acceptable, if uncommon, to use an apostrophe before the 's' when forming the plural of an acronym. So ner.

Re: Joke thread
Now, now. Me, you, Prufrock, we all be pedants, therefore, because this particular corner for pedantry is located hereabouts, it must be Pedants' Corner. And Pru agrees; which means you are out-argued two pedants to one.

nahhh - cos you two's are speaking bollock's.. (also - once pedants start appealing to the majority view, they are lost!)Lost Leopard Spot wrote:Now, now. anyway - as I was typing it, it was a general, worldwide corner for the aspiring pedant... hence, "pedant's corner" (in the same way that Speaker's Corner is Speaker's Corner and not Speakers' Corner.)
Re: Joke thread
But it's Speakers' Corner, which is the point given that's surely where the name for Pedants' Corner comes from!
Edited coz I can't type!

Re: Joke thread
Also your man on the clapham omnibus is very much singular! He's supposed to represent a general 'average' sort of bloke. We aren't supposed to consider a corner populated by one every-man pedant!

Re: Joke thread
Yes we are! The pedant currently occupying Pedant's Corner represents a legion of fellow pedants on whose behalf he (not often she, funnily enough) takes up this daily struggle without flinching! No true pedant speaks merely for himself - he is a clarion spokesbugle for the whole pedantic diaspora...Prufrock wrote:Also your man on the clapham omnibus is very much singular! Was it Watt Tyler who led the Pedants Revolt ?
I always felt it should have been Which Tyler, to be absolutely honest.

Re: Joke thread
Both Bish and Bobo have been in repeat cycle with this joke over the years - each coming up with it several times. However, on May 10, 2007 (10.27 am EDT) Bobo was the first to use it.
