The answer would be whoever went furthest out towards the sun when the earth was at perihelion.

Apollo 8 was in December at perihelion. But the answer is Helios 2.

It was manned (Anders, Bormann and Lovell if my memory serves me right). It was also at perihelion. Plus your logic is faulty, grasshopper, it needs also to be at NEW moon (not full), and it was. The answer, if people, would therefore be the crew of Apollo 8.

I meant Helios 2 was unmanned which you said was the answer (perhaps I should have bolded it). I'm willing to accept the crew of Apollo 8 if your astronomical information is correct.l

It's correct because:
A) the launch was December 21st and therefore mid flight was exactly perihelion
B) the photographs of earth from the circumlunar orbit are famed. And as they're taken with Earth near full, the Moon must have been new.
