I meant Helios 2 was unmanned which you said was the answer (perhaps I should have bolded it). I'm willing to accept the crew of Apollo 8 if your astronomical information is correct.lLost Leopard Spot wrote:It was manned (Anders, Bormann and Lovell if my memory serves me right). The answer would be whoever went furthest out towards the sun when the earth was at perihelion.

I was actually wondering if the small thing turned into the large (because of the = sign) but I couldn't tell the size and thought it might be an ergonomic mouse!mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:Get in!

Re: Only Connect Two........
It won't let me access it now, so I can't check, but when I read it first time I thought it was Icarus (does the question mention Greek) but then dismissed it as it would be very disappointing. I assumed it meant the nation who'd sent a spaceship nearest.

It's correct because:Montreal Wanderer wrote:I meant Helios 2 was unmanned which you said was the answer (perhaps I should have bolded it). The answer would be whoever went furthest out towards the sun when the earth was at perihelion.
A) the launch was December 21st and therefore mid flight was exactly perihelion
B) the photographs of earth from the circumlunar orbit are famed. And as they're taken with Earth near full, the Moon must have been new.
QED.

I believe that you have got to the right answer.... but it's starting to feel that it is unlikely to be this that they were looking for - not least because it's got nothing to do with 2013.

Ison was the one this year, but this Lovejoy went nearer. Maybe that's the answer with a tenuous link.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

If you actually read the question they themselves give you the link to 2013. Voyager 1 is the link. The answer only relates to that: it doesn't have to have taken place in 2013.

But at least I can look on the bright side and know I'm right. Again. That softens the disappointment. , .thebish wrote:oh dear - it looks like you've been all disappointed again...

Anyway, I'll wager (real or internet pounds) that it's either Helios 2 or the crew of Apollo 8.

Re: Only Connect Two........
It doesn't have to have anything to do with 2013 since the 2013 connection is Voyager 1.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:I believe that you have got to the right answer.... but it's starting to feel that it is unlikely to be this that they were looking for - not least because it's got nothing to do with 2013.

Do let us know what q.40 answer was after the 11th, please. I'm intrigued now. (and I'm presuming you need a subscription to access the answers, which I'm also assuming you've got!)mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:Submission deadline tomorrow.Lost Leopard Spot wrote:Anyway, I'll wager (real or internet pounds) that it's either Helios 2 or the crew of Apollo 8.
