Re: The athletics/running thread
At Leverhulme Park on Sunday morning there was this 5K/10K run going on. This bloke ran past who must be in his 80's, seriously, running with a cycling helmet on. He probably thought 'that big lad's a bit old for 5-a-side'.Gary the Enfield wrote:TANGODANCER wrote:Doesn't look too impressive when a pensioner is on your shoulder. That 'pensioner' is a 63 year old sub 45 minute 10k runner. He's been running for donkeys years. First time I've beaten him (and a few others) on this course.
There's some bloody fast old gimmers out there!

Re: The athletics/running thread
What's your best 5k time, Gary? (And others?)
I did one last week, and would like to put my lack of fitness into context.
It's scary how much slower I am now than I was when I lived in the Netherlands for a year and ran for the uni out there.
Come to think of it, what's everyone's best 10k?

That bloke is famous! I only have training times as have never done a 10km race but according to my Nike plus chip times my best 5km is 24'09 and best 10km is 54'17

I thought you said your Nike plus chip under-recorded the distances?Gooner Girl wrote:To make you feel better, i'm way slower then Gary.Gary the Enfield wrote:mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:What's your best 5k time, Gary? (And others?)

Re: The athletics/running thread
I never thought I'd ever contribute to this thread as, basically, running for a bus might be fatal for me...
But I've just started reading Murakami's What I Talk About when I Talk About Running and am loving it. I think it might turn out to be the Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance for running.
Some of the athletes on here might find what their pleasures mean articulated sweetly and - perhaps - profoundly here.
A taster - there's a kind of poetry in this, I think:
Anyway, right now, I'm running hard. I'll wait till later to think about what it all means... I shine my running shoes, rub some sunscreen on my face and neck, set my watch, and hit the road. With the trade winds wafting against my face, a white heron above, its legs dutifully aligned as it crosses the sky, and me listening to my old favourite, the Lovin Spoonful.
The book is about growing old, writing, solitude, thought, examining life, and running 136 miles a week, and a marathon every year.
One for GG, and Enfield, mummy and all the other runners, I reckon.
[And Murakami's Norwegian Wood' is a great novel.]

Ha, ok. Well This time I did 5k at 21.56, which I wasn't very pleased with, given that I put in a 10k at 40:07 in Holland (it is flat there though!)Gary the Enfield wrote: Get over to the athletics thread and post your 5k time!
Did 11secs 100m back in the day...
And I certainly don't have a half marathon time!

Bloody show off!

Mind, I'm quite pleased that, at 44 years of age I am still improving. Might do a sub-20 yet!

Re: The athletics/running thread
I once sprinted across a farm yard and cleared a five foot gate in 2.4 seconds. Mind you, there was a huge fxck-off German Shepherd dog behind me at the time. It's the truth.
