Erm, Odin, O-o-din ....although the ships were wooden.William the White wrote:Woden... Found a video instead (yeah, I'm one of those saddos who still own a video player) and and bought a copy of the old Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtiss, Ernest Borgnine classic, The Vikings. Haven't seen it for donkeys years and enjoyed jumping aboard a longship and setting about all the raping and pillaging and buckle swashing again. Still a good couple of hours worth of entertainment and all for the princely sum of 50p (Nobody wants videos anymore) my good luck as it was picture and sound perfect.

Rather brings it home to you when I realised the film was made in 1958William the White wrote:And a little of the acting...TANGODANCER wrote:Erm, Odin, O-o-din ....although the ships were wooden.William the White wrote:Woden... The film is, indeed, immense... a masterwork... Are you sure it isn't its portrayal of American Christianity as venal, grasping and hypocritical that predisposes you to reject it?TANGODANCER wrote:I can only tell it as I see it Verbal, and this wasn't my idea of an immense film. I already knew Daniel Day Lewis was a terrific actor, but the film was slow and laborious without really going anywhere. Won't say more so as not to spoil it for others who may think differently.Verbal wrote:Didn't know this was on. On reflection, tbh... I realise that it perhaps predisposes me to welcome it...
Though I also welcome its portrayal of american individualist capitalism as almost sociopathic...

Well, I actually saw a well hammered theme, man's greed and wickedness, whatever his motivations and a slow laborious and rather brutal way of telling it. Not a film I'd want to watch again.William the White wrote:The film is, indeed, immense... a masterwork... Has Tango got some hitherto not publicly disclosed association with venal, grasping and hypocritical American Christianity?William the White wrote:The film is, indeed, immense... a masterwork... Anvil: Really enjoyed it other than I hate the music. I actually have a vague recollection of this band before I left Canada but never listened because as already mentioned i hate Heavy Metal.
Was expecting it to be a bit more like a true Spinal Tap, and it did have it's moments, but as dumb as the stars were I found them so sincere and honest that you had to feel for them, which made it a bit hard to laugh at them.
Thought the closing score though sounded a lot like Ryuchi Sakamoto.

As for Heavy Metal, it's not everyone's cup of tea. I like it, though.

Watched the last in the series of that Mitchell and Webb look and shooting stars last night.
Is it just me or is shooting stars far better than the previous series? Still miles off the original but this series has certainly been a better watch than the last abomination.
Mitchell and Webb carry on down the line of complete hit and miss. Occassionally they stray into over-indulgence at the expense of a joke most people will get, but some of the material in this series has been brilliant.

I must've missed the brilliant bits when I've tuned in to remind myself what comedy isn't.BWFC_Insane wrote:Watched the last in the series of that Mitchell and Webb look and shooting stars last night.

Mind you Mitchell has never made me laugh at anything. He's a pseud and not very funny with it (although I know plenty of people disagree with me). After my last comment, that I didn't find him funny, I trawled through Youtube clips and stuff, in a voyage of exploration to find the David Mitchell funny bit. I didn't manage to raise so much as a snigger.
Shooting Stars has been pretty good.
