Bah! That was going to be my working title if I'd had the time/courage/talent to shamelessly rip off that Observer article.

This will be enjoyed by those who like their cocktails sweet... not me...

mine...

juice of half a lime, freshly squeezed, more if you like sour... 2 measures bacardi... mint to taste (I'd double the above)... 1 measure sugar syrup... dash or two of bitters... soda (or fizzy wine - i prefer soda, t'other knocks you out and doesn't taste as nice imo)...

Crush the mint leaves in highball glass, add the lime husk, fill the glass two thirds with crushed ice...

Half fill shaker with broken ice, add rum, lime juice, sugar syrup and bitters and shake till frost... pour into glass and top up with soda to taste... always drink with straw at bottom of glass so you get it through the mint... Best under blue skies between five and six of the afternoon... and no more than two... Mmmmmmm...

Good day one and all.

What a coincidence - the in-laws returned from the caribbean yesterday bringing back a bottle or two of Havana Rum for us - any tips on what to do/mix/glug with it?

Good day to you too, Sir.

Similarly, my elder brother brought a bottle of Raki back from Turkey for me. It's been sat here unopened for a year as I haven't a bleedin' clue as to what goes with it. Any tips etc. etc.

Tango your recipe is about what I use at the bar although a little less rum (short glass). The rum should be either havana club or similar such as Mount Gay or something. Never use Bacardi as even Dos Pascos is a much higher quality rum. The sugar should be brown sugar. You can add a little extra lime than that as while there is sugar in the drink should be a little sour.

Whilst we're on the subject, what recipes have we for a good, strong Long Island Iced Tea? [cough] Sean [/cough]

They are all strong baby. Use half shots of the cheapest white spirits (5 total) you have on the shelf, 1/2 shot lime juice little syrup, coke ice and voila a shitty but strong drink that should guarantee a hangover. I prefer the Glaucoma not because it tastes any better, or gives you any less of a hangover, but simply the name.

How are you cooking it?

If it's like rabbit i'd go for a medium bodied red.

If it's in the pasty, only a pint of bitter really hits the mark...

There's something about dining in el aire libre. Just had a simple ham salad, red onions, pickled beetroots, hard-boiled eggs, tomatoes and the usual green stuffs plus a side dish of chips and a buttered oven-bottom muffin. Glass of Jerez finest to toast it all off. Do nicely for me thanks.

On the topic of drinks, this is one crazy mix. Another Catalina Island special it's titled "Luau Larry's Whicky Whacker", not for the faint-hearted. Get it down in one and you get the hat. It's a mix of light rum, brandy, pineapple juice and grenadine. I'll stick with the Mojitos.

Just BBQ'd a massive Aberdeen Angus burger and some Pork and Applie sausages, washed down with a few cold ones. Might need some after-sun though

Sausage, mash and beans tonight.

However, I need some advice. Mrs EW recently returned from Prague clutching a bottle of Slivovica Zlata.

I tried it as a shot, then with Coke. It's vile, but I'm determined to finish it. I just wondered if anyone else has come across it.

Slivovitz is a fave drink of mine. It needs to be drunk very, very cold, as a shot. Shove it in the freezer for a couple of hours and knock it down.

It's made from plums, and my son's father in law is serbian and makes his own hooch... feckin amazing...

But definitely would lead to brain death if consumed daily...

If you really can't take it straight, think of it as white rum in terms of looking for a mixer, rather than vodka...

or send it to me
