I feel the extra day off will be beneficial for the recovery of the hamstring, obviously.
Beer is a good source of carbohydrates, FACT!
I did a half hour fahrtlek round the park last night and finished it off with a few pints down the pub to aid my carb intake. Niiiice.

Beer is an essential part of my training.

Re: The athletics/running thread
Always considered Gay to be one of the clean ones. His quote was interesting, basically saying he takes full responsibility for what went into his body and that he was let down by someone he trusted. Powell is one of 5 jamaicans to test positive, looks like some dodgy supplement to me. It will all come out at some point.
As for my running, I've done nothing for a week and still have a sore hamstring. Physio on Tues, very frustrating, can't seem to get going again.

Not sure if i'm allowed to do this, if not, then mods please remove.
I have a mate who bought tickets and booked a hotel for the anniversary games at the Olympic Stadium on Friday 26th July. Subsequently he has found that he can't go. Would anyone here be interested in taking the tickets and hotel booking (Travelodge - Covent Garden) off his hands at face value (£200ish)? Programme of events below. Balls. First rugby training session in years for a new club - really enjoyed it. Then, 2 minutes from the end of a 2 hour session, my hamstring goes *pop* trying to step off through a gap. Gutted - that will be no pre-season for me then.

Re: The athletics/running thread
Hamstrings can be a bugger. Had mine hammered by the physio yesterday then jogged 20 mins ok, but can't do the 5k race I had planned tomorrow eve. A week's holiday in Cyprus beckons with some light exercise, then back on it when I get back.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:Balls. Hope you can get it sorted quick, good luck.

I don't know. I felt (and maybe even heard) a very distinctive 'pop' when it happened. I'm going to see the physio at the gym at work tomorrow and see what they say (conveniently, I'm off today, which means I can give it some RICE time).mrkint wrote:Bad luck, mate. Re: The athletics/running thread
I got this advice from an ex golf teammate who also happened to be an ex pro for Wasps and England at fly half!
Alright roomy-sorry to hear about the hammy. As you can well imagine, I managed to do mine a few times and the best physio I saw got me back and running in a couple of weeks from a grade 2 tear. You seem to be getting a lot of advice, so I thought I'd put in my twopenneth.
It is best you go and see a physio, but what happens is that your muscle will knit itself together again and starts the process once the bleeding from the initial tear has subsided (after a day or two). Whilst knitting together again it pulls the muscle tighter making it shorter, so to prevent having a shorter hamstring post injury the best thing to do is to keep active on it. I was given a 10 day program which involved heading to a running track and doing 10x100m (with a walk back to the start after each 100m). Go at a speed which is just below feeling any pain. If you do feel pain just slow down until there is no pain and complete the 10x100m, even if you end up walking them. By the 10th day you should be nearing full pace, but if you aren't just continue until you can do the 10 reps. Don't over-pust things and make sure you see a physio in conjunction with this and you shouldn't be out of action too long.
It's a pretty boring process, but these things always are!

....is the only thing you should take from that. Different bodies/ metabolic rates/ recovery times/ diagnosis. Please don't attempt that kind of recovery regime until you've contacted a physio.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:I got this advice from an ex golf teammate who also happened to be an ex pro for Wasps and England at fly half!

I went and saw a physio and had a scan this afternoon. Grade 2 tear but already healing well. Going to take it relatively safe and aim to be back on it in 5 weeks. No running for this first week.

I'm in no particular rush, but this stuff about it knitting together shorter is valid I think.Gary the Enfield wrote:mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:I went and saw a physio and had a scan this afternoon. Re: The athletics/running thread
I don't think it is. Valid, that is. Frozen joints are not due to the healing process, they are due to the trauma. Trauma and healing processes can all be overcome later by exercise and right living. Injuries that cause permanent mechanical damage are far more destructive of tissue than a mere tear.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:I'm in no particular rush, but this stuff about it knitting together shorter is valid I think.Gary the Enfield wrote:mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:I went and saw a physio and had a scan this afternoon. What you are quoting, sounds like professional advice given to get athletes needing to earn a living back on track as fast as possible. This is not the best way forward for amateurs. Let it heal properly first, stretching can and will come later.
