My pic of the week. "On the Sands" by Winslow Homer 1881. Love this. He's managed to tell his story with almost no detail and created a totally atmospheric scene.

Unfortunately, ( according to this link) it doesn't seem to be on view anywhere right now Will.
I found it on Google Images whilst searching for something else.

It is in the Collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

Went to the Food and drink festival (this is really good - must remember not to have lunch so that I can sample the street food!).

As usual there was an artists' tent featuring the work of members of the Bolton art Circle.

As usual there was a really high level of technical skill on show.

And a disappointing lack of artistic imagination.

Another discovered favourite watercolour. I see this as somewhere between impressionism and abstract (others may not agree). Either way, it attracts greatly. It's titled Trafalgar Square and is by an Australian artist named Wayne Roberts and unfortunately is in a private collection.
More of his work can be seen here: http://www.wroberts.com.au/html/watercolors.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

What a load of old shit. Looks like it's been left out on a window ledge in the rain. Absolute rubbish.

It's actually very clever. If you step away from it an view it through half-closed eyes. Nelson's column and the lions on the right, fountain dead ahead, buses going down Pall Mall (Mummy?)
on the left and all the bustle, with Big Ben in the far distance. It's all about light and shade and colour. I love it.

Nah, I'm just of the opinion that a painting should look identifiably like the thing it's a painting of. Been a funny summer here, a few days aside it's not been that hot. I've been able to be outside during the day far more than previous summers combined :D

I can't see a big brass bell anywhere on there, regardless as to how much I squint at it. ;)

See that's much better. And something I find to be absolutely superb in it is that it's clear to the viewer that it's just been pissing it down. That's an art in itself, I find.

It isn't about a particular type of art. Have a look at this: These are by an award-winning B.A and art teacher. The first one is titled Trafalga square winter dusk: I can't make head or tail of these and think they're truly awful. Muddy colours and child-like brushwork. No comparison with the one I put up.

Which is a truth. Thing is the artist is much respected and holds a high position in the art world. I can't imagine anybody seeing any skill or attraction in these.
