I can totally see how she'd wind folk up, but it absolutely does it for me!
And Bish, it's even possible to find pictures of the divine Mrs Ennis-Hill (agh) looking none too spectacular during competition!

the challenge has been set!

Re: The athletics/running thread
What an appalling day. Missed parkrun as I got horribly drunk then got what I deserved via an ill-fated trip to Nottingham. However tomorrow is a new day and training starts for real then!

How was Jonathan Edwards' world record 18 years ago? I remember it as if it was yesterday and it inspired me to take up the event. 18 years????

Sprint relay cock up again. They're celebrating when it's quite clear they've cocked up. They must know there's a chance they'll be DQ'd. Appalling record in major Champs.

Re: The athletics/running thread
hardly a cock-up - a calculated gamble - playing with the margins - which is what they have to do to be in with any chance of a medal - it didn't pay off this time, but it oh so very nearly did.LeverEnd wrote:Sprint relay cock up again. what else do you expect them to do?

Re: The athletics/running thread
They have 20 metres in which to pass it, most teams manage it most of the time. Occasionally there will be a mishap but that's 6 times in the last 7 champs that they have been DQ'd. 5 of those were in heats, hardly the place to be playing with margins, more an indicator of general ineptitude and/or bad coaching.Bruce Rioja wrote:He's such a fanboyGooner Girl wrote:^ Bish in watching athletics shocker?!?!thebish wrote:hardly a cock-up - a calculated gamble - playing with the margins - which is what they have to do to be in with any chance of a medal - it didn't pay off this time, but it oh so very nearly did.LeverEnd wrote:Sprint relay cock up again. I also think not getting DQ'd is fairly key in having any chance of a medal!
It's just embarrassing, not least because some of these guys have received funding for relay running only, despite not being fast enough to qualify for individual funding. I think they've stopped that now because it's just making UKA look silly. Talking of looking silly, Dwain looked a right bellend in that hat. I suppose there is some poetic justice in a teammate's mistake costing him a medal after his cheating ways cost several teammates medals after the event previously.
On the plus side the women got a bronze after someone else also cocked up! Felt sorry for Adam Gemili, great season for him and a medal would have been the icing on the cake after his mistake cost them in the Olympics. Genuinely excited to see how he does next year and in Rio 2016.

strewth no!! heard them whining on about it on the radio on the way back from work...Gooner Girl wrote:^ Bish in watching athletics shocker?!?!thebish wrote:hardly a cock-up - a calculated gamble - playing with the margins - which is what they have to do to be in with any chance of a medal - it didn't pay off this time, but it oh so very nearly did.LeverEnd wrote:Sprint relay cock up again. the opinion I expressed there was the considered opinion of all of the people who seemed to be in a position to know what they were talking about on the issue... yes - there have been cock-ups in the past - but they all reckoned this was a calculated gamble - and seemed to agree that it was worth taking... yes - they have 20m - but these guys are running at about 10m/s... so they have 2secs, unless they slow right down and play it safe... it's probably the most difficult manoevre in athletics - and they took a gamble at the very edge of the margin - and it very very nearly paid off. The opinion of the studio experts who had participated in the 4x100m relay was that it was a better option to gamble at the margins and go for bronze than to play a safe transfer and finish 6th or 7th...
Re: The athletics/running thread
There's a degree of gambling, but 6 out of 7 is unacceptable whichever way you look at it. Now they aren't directly funded for relay I don't care so much.
