I watched The Hours last night. Spent the first 15 mins wondering wtf this was about, but finally got onto its wavelength and enjoyed and admired the film, stunningly well acted, intelligent script, pretty tough theme - the impulse to suicide - the will to rescue - the banalities and unintentional cruelties of the family. Not easy. short on aliens (unless you count the English and American middle classes), very few bangs, shortage of car chases, no South African accents. So won't suit everyone...

As there are in Das Experiment (German - subtitles) which I watched this afternoon. Excellent movie in which a psychological experiment goes devastatingly wrong. Much violence. A familiar premise - a simulation game, half the volunteers are prisoners, the other half guards, they are in prison for two weeks, with certain inviolable rules. A sadistic brute starts to win control of the guards, a rebellious prisoner is his antagonist. Played out very well though. High tension drama. Recommmend.

Just watched This is England. A superb film, an excellent and very relevant story, superbly well acted - and moving.

This is the third Shane Meadows film that I've seen now, all in the past couple of weeks, each of which take you from piss-funny to somewhere scary, even deep. It looks to me as though he gives the actors little more than a general idea and then the rest of it is down to them to develop, including ad-libbing. That's how it comes across to me and is why every aspect of it truly works magnificently.

You're right, Mucker. I've been successfully determined to miss every single second of it until I'd seen the film. Is there an imminent re-run due or shall I just wait for the box-set to come out? Reading a couple of the posts on here about the TV series, especially those that have gone along the lines of 'Oh, last night's took an unexpected bleak turn', I'm expecting more of the same. Excellent. Can't wait.

Glad you liked it - what next, Somers Town, Once upon a time in the midlands?

OUATITM is definitely my least favourite on the list, just behind ST but both still pretty good, classic Meadows bleakness! again a fair few of his regular cast are featured. There is also 'Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee' which is a total change in direction but still worth a watch. Actually, i think you'll quite like Somers Town, just a hunch.

Also, if you have become a fan of Paddy C, check out 'In America' not a Meadows film, but still quality - especially the little gorl who plays his eldest daughter!

been reading alot about the new Wall Street sequel, caused me to seek out the original which i watched last night. thought it was brilliant, really really enjoyed it, cant believe it hasnt been brought to my attention before? a new favourite.

Also forgot how friggin cool Michael Douglas is! not a bad actor either!

i'm tryna remember a film from the early seventies (possibly 1969) with similar themes- theres a group of people - and its based around vietnam war, but i think its in america , and the group falls out and splits and one half become 'soldiers' chasing them across country, i forget what happens .. it might be one of them alerna-history things, and its shot like a documentry, all i can remember is the director is british .. its doing my head in i cant remember its name or the director or even the plot properly.. crap.

Bit tame after the current posts I suppose, but the wife bought me Russel Crowe's Robin Hood and I watched it tonight. Okay as a film, but nothing special. Good battle scenes, particularly the Dunkirk in reverse with French men and boats bit and playing with the legend is a bit old hat by now.
