The above post is complete bollox/garbage/nonsense, please point this out to me at any and every occasion possible.
Re: Today I'm happy about......
basically - still being alive
had a bit of a horror bike smash-up this lunchtime... hit some black ice on a bend (fortunately not going fast) - lost the front wheel... bike goes down and skids across the carriageway (me still on it) and smashes into an oncoming car....
thanks to wearing the right gear - and a whole heap of good fortune - I escaped alive and nothing broken - and some deep gritty grazes (which will hurt like feck tomorrow...)
anyway - little bit of shock seeping in now (was gonna drive up to Middlesbrough this afternoon - but am now putting that off until tomorrow)
basically though - VERY happy to be alive!!

Should've had a smaller aperture on that camera to get a wider depth of field. And the on-camera flash hasn't helped. Seriously though, unlucky! Hope the bike isn't too smashed up.

bike is most likely a write-off - but will get a garage to tell me the bad news tomorrow when I can get it recovered... it's currently lying on a muddy verge covered in police incident tape...

Good escape Bish. Hurt like hell tomorrow sounds like the better half of the deal, given the possibilities.

Seriously glad it was no worse. Come off a bike a couple of times and it's far from fun.

Glad you are o.k. we kneed you here.

thanks Tango, Clapton. worthy and seanworth...
the missus is a slightly bigger issue than the grazes... I suppose it is understandable that she is less than happy (should the old girl be a write-off) about me going out and buying a new one... has to be done though!! (when I say "new" - I don't actually mean "new" - I ain't made of money!!)

How far of a ride home did you have afterwards? Getting back on after coming a cropper is a bit of a strain, must be done though and glad you did that.thebish wrote:thanks Tango, Clapton. worthy and seanworth...

the bike is totally unrideable and is on an embankment by the side of the road covered in police tape... I got a ride home with the bizzies - who - I should add - were utterly fantastic!TANGODANCER wrote:How far of a ride home did you have afterwards? Re: Today I'm happy about......
Ah, gotcha. I ask because I once hired a moped on holiday. Set off with the wife on pillion duty. Coasting round a corner I automatically leaned with the curve. She did the opposite and tried to straighten up. Bike went into a serious wobble, we crossed two carriagways and finished up spilled on the road, ten feet in front of an eight wheeler. Very fortunately the driver was top notch, saw what was happening and managed to stop. If he hadn't we'd both be dead.thebish wrote:the bike is totally unrideable and is on an embankment by the side of the road covered in police tape... Getting back on and riding off took a bit of self control, the reason I asked. Sounds like you were very, very lucky.

some pretty awesome home-made dressing here... cosmetic cotton pads and tape!!
a career in the NHS does not beckon... vacuumed all the grit out with the dyson lose-no-suction wound-cleaning tool...

Ouch! Been there Bish and I feel your pain. Great to see someone was looking after you!
I binned a CBR600 in similar circumstances (diesel rather than black ice) but was pleasantly surprised by the offer from the insurance company. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you on that one.

Then listen to her, you daft bastard. Take this as a blessing & realise what could have happened and, apart from being grateful, do as you're told or every single time you go out you'll be putting her through a 1,000 deaths.thebish wrote:thanks Tango, Clapton. worthy and seanworth...

Sorry to be a boring git ... even sorrier to be backing up a Welsh woman, but do it for her if not yourself.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Holy smoke (well it's topical), thebish. I hope you were alert enough to thank the truckie for his skill as he was probably a bit shaken as well.
I've had a couple of incidents with bikes down and neither was much fun. Once I picked up a rider who had 'lost' it on a rather tempting 'S' bend and whose bike I noticed some 30 metres off the road and then the rider struggling to get back to the tarmac. He I carted off to hospital. The other happened in front of me (I was in the city walking to the station) when the rider came 'like a bat out of hell' over a rise and slammed into the side of a car that was leaving the garage of the building in which I worked. I don't know whether he survived, but I doubt it.
Perhaps both those events were due to over exuberance on the part of the riders but, for certain for sure, they confirmed my opinion that riding on two wheels in today's traffic is an exercise in masochism.
