a little sound-and-lyric package of sheer genius...
Always a favourite Bish. I prefer the Robert Wyat version tho.
never tried that - will go and have a listen...
ok - I tried it... and I have to say - no, no, no, no and no again!
I find it a tad more mellancholic..........
Re: What are you playing tonight?
I found it a tad more "squeaky"! (plus - I like Costello's rough-edge voice..) Probably, though - Costello's is the one I have grown up with and it would take summat pretty awesome to shift the familiarity factor..Il Pirate wrote:thebish wrote:Il Pirate wrote:thebish wrote:Elvis Costello - Shipbuilding..

I think* - with covers - it's best to do summat radically different with it - or leave it alone...
*preposterous generalisation alert!!

One of very few that completely stops me in my tracks whenever I hear it.
May the bridges I burn light your way

The absolutely joyous new Beach House track, Myth. Available here:

tour dates in London and Brighton in May. though calling that a tour is a bit of a stretch tbh.

Re: What are you playing tonight?
Today I am mostly playing Chopin's Nocturnes - as I have before - but I have never owned the complete set...
I bought myself the complete set and they arrived this morning..
the difference is - it's the first recording I have where they are played by a woman - Elisabeth Leonskaja to be precise... most of my recorded piano music is played by a man...
I have to say - she's fecking ace!!

A flash-fry of Vondelpark, Kenny Larkin, Modeselektor, Late, Scuba, Martyn, Disrupt, Zomby, Fantastic Mr Fox and Black Chow amongst other ingredients.

I'm going to have to start widening my range of music. I haven't heard of a single one of those bands LGMLittle Green Man wrote:A flash-fry of Vondelpark, Kenny Larkin, Modeselektor, Late, Scuba, Martyn, Disrupt, Zomby, Fantastic Mr Fox and Black Chow amongst other ingredients.

I suspect most of them are laptops rather than bands.Harry Genshaw wrote:I'm going to have to start widening my range of music. Re: What are you playing tonight?
Do you know the work of Ketil Bjornstad, thebish? His The River is a gimme for Chopin followers. Magnificent. A conversation between Piano (Bjornstad) and Cello (David Darling). In the right mood - alone, essential, I can utterly lose myself in this work... It can't be on in the background though, not for me, anyway, has to be headphones...thebish wrote:Today I am mostly playing Chopin's Nocturnes - as I have before - but I have never owned the complete set...

Almost certainly you'll find a taste of it online...
Re: What are you playing tonight?
funnily enough - someone recommended Bjornstad to me a couple of weeks ago!! i looked him up on youtube - and found just the piano (not the cello duets)...William the White wrote:Do you know the work of Ketil Bjornstad, thebish? I guess i can see why you might bracket him with chopin - in terms of the cordless right hand and simple corded left hand... but beyond that, I'm not sure I'd place him in the same league... it's difficult to put into words quite why - but I'd have put him in the draw marked muzak - or the drawer marked "relaxation tape backing tracks"... to my (admittedly not that well educated) ear, he doesn't seem to be going anywhere - the music lacks destination... there's no tension in it...
i'll go and have a listen and see if adding the cello brings further depth... (I love Cello!)

I'd like to add that there is nothing (not a thing) hotter than a buxom young blonde, with a glint in her eye, playing the cello.

I suspect it's at least partly to do with them having to sit with legs apart straddling a huge vibrating instrument...Prufrock wrote:I'd like to add that there is nothing (not a thing) hotter than a buxom young blonde, with a glint in her eye, playing the cello.

What a fascinating snapshot into the fetishes of the middle classes.Prufrock wrote:I'd like to add that there is nothing (not a thing) hotter than a buxom young blonde, with a glint in her eye, playing the cello.
For me, there is nothing (not a thing) hotter than a drunken chubby student, with a kebab in her hand, throwing up outside of a nightclub.
Businesswoman of the year.
