Nice one. I'll look them up.Prufrock wrote:LeverEnd wrote:Just back from watching the magnificent Chuck Ragan at Gorilla. His set was outstanding from start to finish and he's one of the most personally likeable performers I've seen. Got there early as recommended by Prufrock and enjoyed the opening singer Billy The Kid very much. Next support was the enthusiastic but mediocre Northcote.
Ragan has been going years in various bands but still clearly loves touring and there was a very inclusive feel to the whole thing, he joined Billy The Kid for a duet and clearly looks to help these younger lesser known acts get on. His interaction with the audience was also genuine and avoided the increasingly common clichéd shouting of 'HEY MANCHESTER!!' for cheap cheers.
It's a great mix of punk and folk with a bit of country and I can't recommend it enough.
Glad you enjoyed it dude, the man is a hero.
Speaking of men I love, last night I went to see Mongol Horde. I'm still blind drunk, seeing double at work, but totally worth it. Such a f*cking brilliant gig. GtE would be proud of me. Rocked hard and ended up in the Big Red

It's Frank's side project. It's very loud and very angry and very un-Sleeping Souls (thought the guitarist is from the Sleeping Souls. The drummer was the drummer in his first band, Million Dead). First gig I've been to with a pit in ages.

There certainly is. V glad no tequila was involved though. *Shudder*. Extended as far as drinking Guinness and clinging on to the right end of a pool cue.Gary the Enfield wrote:Prufrock wrote:LeverEnd wrote:Just back from watching the magnificent Chuck Ragan at Gorilla. Good man. You know certain of the barmaids, if you offer to buy them a drink, will insist on a tequila but only if you do one too (and you pay for both). there's something about those girl's tattoos..........

Re: Where are you going tonight?
Ah OK Pru. They played in Manchester a couple of weeks ago, thought about going but the music is not my cup of tea, however much I like Frank Turner. Didn't remember the name of the band.

Ha yeah, it's not really the sort of music you go along anyway and have a look if it's not your thing!
He's got loads of stick on twitter for it apparently from fans of his solo stuff which baffles me. I mean, if you don't like it, fine, but he doesn't make music to suit your specific tastes!

Re: Where are you going tonight?
Octagon last night for the last play of the current season, Love Story.
Where do I begin?
Got stuck in very heavy traffic on the M60 and it took us over an hour to get to Bolton, but we rolled in to the foyer just in time to meet another couple who were ever so excited at being there for the second time that week. This was promising, we thought.
The play is a musical adaptation of the film that we all know and, erm, love. The program claims the sentimental bits have been wound back a bit from the film version but we didn't think so. In fact, as the audience stood around us to applaud at the end Mrs C leaned over to me and said 'What a load of sentimental twaddle that was!" and my reply was "How the clucking bell can anyone want to see that twice?"
I think we were probably in a minority with this view but no, this was American schmaltze at its worst for us. Good backing musicians and a good set of voices but a poor season closer.
Highlight for me was recognising one of the cast from elsewhere. It took me a couple of minutes to place him but it was one of The Thirteen, the corpulent spice dealer from Game of Thrones.
Roll on next season, which kicks off with Journeys End followed in November by Early One Morning by someone called Les Smith

Castlefield Bowl to watch Pixies. Fantastic summer night for it. First band Royal Blood were superb. Currently waiting for Maximo Park to end their dreadful set. Bring on the Pixies! Wanted to see this band for a long time.

Just watched Caro Emerald at Llangollen. A great venue in superb weather and a very, very good performance.
Feeling good about today. Nice.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Far from my usual bag but I really enjoyed the bit of her Glasto set that they showed. That 'Liquid Lunch' song's a proper earworm. Tune in - hear what I say.bobo the clown wrote:Just watched Caro Emerald at Llangollen. A great venue in superb weather and a very, very good performance.

Saw her at The Lowry last year, brilliant singer with a great band. Regularly listen to her stuff.Bruce Rioja wrote:Far from my usual bag but I really enjoyed the bit of her Glasto set that they showed. That 'Liquid Lunch' song's a proper earworm. Pixies tonight put on a top gig, very happy to have finally seen such a great band who I have admired for a long time. Will be looking out for Royal Blood from now on as well. Maximo park were dreadful.
Clapton, enjoy James, wish I was there as well.

Re: Where are you going tonight?
Just seen an ad for a concert at The Railway, Bromley Cross on 2-11-2014. Brought it all right back...Fairport Convention (along with Steeleye Span, Pentangle and all that folky stuff) a big part of my favourite music scene back in the sixties and seventies, are there in the flesh. I'm a bit past concert-going these days, but oh the happy memories.

Blimey. Not that I was doubting your word or owt, Tango, but for a band that have been around for as long as I've been alive and that still hold their own annual convention (which this year includes, amongst others, The Wonderstuff and The Waterboys) to be playing the pub up the road just didn't compute. I thought that maybe you'd been had over by some clever punsome twist of the name by a tribute band - but no - Fairport Convention are indeed playing The Railway on the 2nd November.TANGODANCER wrote:Just seen an ad for a concert at The Railway, Bromley Cross on 2-11-2014. Re: Where are you going tonight?
Tis indeed the truth. They're doing a Manchester date somewhere around that time too. (I got it off their official website purely by chance, whilst checking something else out). PS: I still have a long playing vinyl version of Steeleye Span's Tim Hart and Maddy Prior album "Adam catched Eve" . How time flies....Bruce Rioja wrote:Blimey. Re: Where are you going tonight?
That era was the start of a love affair, that's lasted ever since, with madrigal type stuff, minor chords and all that clever guitar down tuning and stuff that made such wonderful sounds. There's even a little passage in the Maddy Pryor Carnival Band version of the old Christmas carol: "I Saw Three Ships, that hits the spot: Ear worm time....
