Definitely worth watching. You'll find several posts about it earlier in this thread if you can be arsed...Bruce Rioja wrote:Just opened the LoveFilm envelope and next up is The Wave. Has anyone seen it? It's a German film about a teacher that embarks upon a Third Reich type of experiment with his pupils.

I think you'll find they improve the first two.

Strictly Come Clog Dancing on BBC4. Tracing the history of clog dancing in the north east. Some fascinating old shots (Charlie Chaplin ans Oliver Hardy were both clog dancers at one time) and showing how traditional clogs are still made by just one guy in Wales. Highlight was a mass clog dance in Newcastle centre by about 150 volunteers. Went down a bomb with the crowd. Good to see the mixed dancers long, short, fat, thin, young and old all having a go.
NUFC can now officially be called "cloggers".

My ill daughter is in bed, and my wife's out. Wanking at any time nowadays has a pang of guilt, but you recommend I leave the Kebablette in the house all alone to go wanking in a car park?

North east? I didn't know that clog dancing had much of a tradition up there. Had they concentrated on the north west then they could've concentrated on this bunch of knobbers up in Bacup/Britannia that think that it's still ok to black-up and dance around clacking halves of coconut shell together. I shit you not!TANGODANCER wrote:Strictly Come Clog Dancing on BBC4. Tracing the history of clog dancing in the north east.

That's probably because some origins claim Morris Dancing originated mimicking the Moors and Christians battles that are still commemorated all over Spain, rather than having any racist overtones. I found this link to back that up:Bruce Rioja wrote:North east? I didn't know that clog dancing had much of a tradition up there. No, this lot, 'The Bacup Cloggers', were on the BBC Northwest News on Friday evening by strange coincidence. You are right, they were blacked up from face to clogs and my first instinct was to wonder why they thought that was okay. However, they went on to explain that its nothing at all to do with race. The dances originate in the Cornish tin mines and the blackened faces represent the state of the miners after a days work. Ranvir Singh looked a bit dubious but accepted it.TANGODANCER wrote:That's probably because some origins claim Morris Dancing originated mimicking the Moors and Christians battles that are still commemorated all over Spain, rather than having any racist overtones. Re: What are you watching tonight?
Interesting. Missed that one. The north east lot's clog dancing also had connections with miners and goes way back but the programme I saw was more about percussion and rapper dancing . I've seen loads of Morris dancers around Haworth, the north west and even here in Bolton, but actual clog dancing isn't Morris dancing as such except for the clog wearing.. Aparently the Bacup blacking -up is unique as such. To save a lot of explanation (if you're interested) Wiki do a decent enough breakdown at:clapton is god wrote: No, this lot, 'The Bacup Cloggers', were on the BBC Northwest News on Friday evening by strange coincidence. Re: What are you watching tonight?
Macbeth on BBC4 was a stunning production, with Patrick Stewart giving an outstanding performance in the title role. Shakespeare traditionalists would hate it - it's set in the 20th century, in a totalitarian tyranny - the cultural references are mostly Stalinist Russia (even down to what looked like clips from Eisenstein movies).
I particularly liked the depiction of the weird sisters - shown as three nurses in a land of blood and pain. Intelligent and effective interpretation of Shakespeare - who, once again, is shown to be a dramatist who endures beyond his time.
Watch out for repeats - they'll come.
Thanks to CAPSLOCK for the heads up on this - I'd have missed it without that.
