What are you playing tonight?

Not for everyone, so I wouldn't suggest listening to it if you think Metallica are heavy

Dear me. My ears are bleeding. What a fecking racket. Was the split down to musical differences?
The guitars are not heavy or fast enough for the vocals, seemed a bit mismatched.

I'm hoping that this compilation is not 'dodgy'.

It's a collection of instrumental music from way back when; those of you under the age of fifteen need not check the link.

It has been ordered and, hopefully, will turn up at Maison Dujon mid-week.

Having just had a quick peek at the link Dujon, did you mean to type under fifteen or under fifty? :-)

Hot Chip are brilliant. That is not up for discussion as it's an empirically verified fact.

Well, the 3 CDs I mentioned above arrived in Tuesday's post. At $19.99 for the set they are an absolute bargain for someone who grew up in the '50s/'60s era. My nostalgia genes will be sated in a few days but for the time being the CDs are getting a fine work out. :)

Anyway - Stone Roses

What makes folk claim their first album was the greatest ever

Genuine question this

Why...just what is it that makes i a 'great' album

Yeah, theres some good tunes n all that, but 'greatest ever'

Why?

Went to the gig on Saturday with some friends who claim they are 'the best band ever'. I like them, but I don't agree (obviously Frank Zappa is the best ever), but it is a very good album in my opinion. Can anyone really say why an album is the best ever, other than it's the one that they like the best?

This is the best album ever: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lather-Frank-Za ... 816&sr=8-1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Just because.

Four basic requirements for an outstanding album

1) No need to skip any tracks, all are enjoyable.

2) Loads of tracks that could easily have been singles that weren't.

3) Longevity. You never tire of "Oooh, love that shit, turn it up" moments.

4) Je ne sais quoi. The album has a "feel" to it that sets it apart from others. Some may call this emotional content

The Stone Roses fits this. As do many others. But it is a superb album. It feels like the sun is shining when its playing (basically, no4).
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Disagree with number 2 when it comes to requirements for making a great album. I can think of lots of songs that don't fit the 'mould' of being a single yet are still fantastic songs. Also, a lot of singles that are released on some great albums tend to be the weaker songs, or more suited to radio airplay or TV, rather than because it's their strongest track.

The one key point that makes a great album is number 3.

Agree on number 2.

Great album shouldn't need ANY singles from it necessarily.

Not every group is into the singles market.

I think 3) is important but 4) can be influenced by the mood you're in - plenty of great albums that on any given Monday morning I wouldn't necessarily want to listen to, but at 1900 on a Friday, I might.
