Didn't want to start a new thread for this so:
I keep getting cut off from the internet by messages saying "Internet Explorer not Responding"
I did the Windows dialogue thing and they can find no connection problems. It happens too regularly to be a coincidence. Any clues?

Yes, but the daft thing is, the wife's laptop runs off my signal and she has no problems.

OK. The reason I ask is that sometimes your computer will tell you that you are online but means you are connected to the router (only) - but the router is not connected to the internet.

If your wife is able to connect then it sounds like the router is Ok. First step would be to reboot your router anyway (weak internet signal) and see where that gets you.

I kept getting that when using wireless although other laptops worked at same time, bloody hate wireless so when for those power point adaptors that send the signal through your plugs, works a treat now never losing signal and faster.

Yeah, but people next door can use your internet, as there is "leakage". ITK. Possibly.

It's true.

Bloke next door hacked my bank account using nothing more than a table lamp cord and a Casio calculator.

Are we talking wireless or wired in? If it is wireless it is a common problem caused by one of a few things, mine for instance was caused by having Virgin broadband programme from uni still installed whilst trying to use BT network at home. Fixed it short term by plugging it into the router by cable, fixed it long term by getting rid of Virgin programme. If it is wired I have no idea.

Also, if you go on holiday for a couple of weeks, ie not using your internet, some unscrupulous broadband providers downgrade your supply (look, I don't know the technical terms, but the Virgin engineer admitted this) so they can allocate more to other users for faster speeds. This f*cks your own supply.

If someone could put that in techy language, it might make sense.

you can leave IE installed - just download firefox and set it as your default browser. then - don't use IE.

Fair enough, but doesn't that take up more memory on an already slow unit?

it takes up a bit of hard-disk space - but no extra memory of you are running Firefox INSTEAD of IE. in fact - firefox is probably lighter on the memory than IE.

the lightest out there (on memory) is possibly Google Chrome - fewer bells and whistles...
