Germany scored in extra time to wipe me out for the day.Montreal Wanderer wrote:In the pool I went for a drawish day.
Spain v Ukraine 1-1
Tunisia v SA 2-0
Germany v Poland 1-1

I thought Poland had scored when the Beeb text said this:
Equalizer?88 mins: Tim Borowski shoots wide from the edge of the area as Germany push forward desperately in search of an equaliser.

Monty, it'll be because Villa's shot was on target and could possibly have gone in anyway, whereas Beckham's cross, if left unhindered, would have bounced wide. (I think that's right).Montreal Wanderer wrote:Why was England's goal an own goal, when Villa's free kick for Spain's second goal was clearly deflected more significantly by the Ukrainian defender? Just curious.

The same BBC who are convinced that we have Anthony Gardner at left back.
Auntie is far from flawless, in fact, their sports coverage is borderline shite.

Thanks, - I'd argue that the goalie was in position to save the Villa free kick and was completely wrongfooted by the deflection - also that Beckham kick might have gone in because, I understand, no one can bend it like Beckham (except Jussi in Gert's opinion). Still, I'm just an argumentative chap. In hockey "own goals" are credited to the last player on the scoring team to touch it which might remove the question of judgement in football.Bruce Rioja wrote:Monty, it'll be because Villa's shot was on target and could possibly have gone in anyway, whereas Beckham's cross, if left unhindered, would have bounced wide. Sounds logical. I watched a lot of ice hockey when in Canada in 2004. The fact that there are three halves to each game is a tad confusing.Montreal Wanderer wrote:In hockey "own goals" are credited to the last player on the scoring team to touch it which might remove the question of judgement in football.

Only Americans think that, Warty - we call them periods. I can't think of any rerason except it may give the home team something of an advantage. In the playoffs there can be any number of periods.warthog wrote:Sounds logical. I watched a lot of ice hockey when in Canada in 2004. The standard phrase is Toronto at Montreal, hence visitor first. I did find it confusing when I first came here but one quickly adjusts - like looking the correct way when crossing a street. Those who don't adjust tend to Darwin out.Gertie wrote:And they don't put the home team's name first.... That confused me.

What a weird piece of information!!Montreal Wanderer wrote:Yes, he scored against Spain in the Euro 2004 qualifying. In looking up his record I found the following distinction (who the hell follows these things?):Stelios also has the distinction of being part of the substitution that holds the record of the largest difference between the number of letters in the surnames of two players in a Premiership substitution. This occurred when he replaced Ibrahim Ba during a league game for Bolton Wanderers on February 7, 2004

What a wonderful piece of trivia, I can see them arguing now over the answer to "Who holds the record ....." in the Question of Sport programme. Out of interest are they still running that programme on BBC? It was the best entertaining sports programme on TV in the old days.Montreal Wanderer wrote:Yes, he scored against Spain in the Euro 2004 qualifying. Depression is just a state of mind, supporting Bolton is also a state of mind hence supporting Bolton must be depressing QED
Yes they are. But my favourite round 'What happened next?' is often replaced with an 'Observation Round' now.FaninOz wrote:What a wonderful piece of trivia, I can see them arguing now over the answer to "Who holds the record ....." in the Question of Sport programme.
