Could you please explain the American education system, we hear it all the time on tv and film etc regards different grades, kindergarten, middleschool, preps etc etc but never really understood it. im guessing (for eg) 11th grade is the same as '5th year' or ''year 11' over here, ie 15-16 year olds??? & i have always wondered why AC Slater calls Zack 'preppy' in saved by the bell?americantrotter wrote:Congratulations everyone. That's a long question. LOL
Elementary School
Kindergarten usually start at 5 or 6 (1st year of school, we nicked the idea off the Germans)
Grades 1-5 follow
Middle School, sometimes referred to as Junior High
Grades 6-8
High School
Grades 9-12 (also referred to as Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years)
By the time you finish you should be 17 or 18.
Preppie is a style of dress and attitudes, think of the exact opposite of the greasers in the 50's movies. Prep is an insult to me, but many people find it something to aspire too. The popular kids often where the preps.
Prep School is usually a private school that prepares you for college. Most kids go to public school unless they live in an area with a poor school system, or they are particularly rich and want to send their children to school with similar children.

Cheers prep
i joke of course, thanks for the info.
so are middle school and high school actual seperate schools, ie you have to move to a completely different school when you reach the 9th grade? or are the just terms for the age groups within the same campus?
if Zack was a preppie, AC must have been a Jock? a tough kid, plays (american)football and wrestles?

Ah well, passed all the others.
Bad luck.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Well done to those who got what they wanted today. My little sister got an A and three Bs and is off to Nottingham to study French and Management.
Blurred's right about Liverpool. Apart from the hateful football team of course. The Tort/Medical Law professor (Michael Jones) is top notch and I swore by his textbook this year, as is the EU Law bloke Michael Dougan, a Cambridge man. Good library too, as I found out as an interloper at Easter. The nightlife is pretty good - I think I'm out there tonight actually.blurred wrote:Great University to do Law at, I reckon, although I might be biased. We've actually got a handful of very, very capable professors here (McLeod for contract, Reid for Criminal, Barr for Tort were all top notch) as well as the ones that Mummy has mentioned.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:Blurred's right about Liverpool. I wouldn't go as far as calling us 'hateful' though

And you're out over here tonight? Another reason to be glad I'm off down to London, then

PS - go and see 'Brick Up The Mersey Tunnels'. It's hilarious.

Well done you lot.
I did Russian to AS and went to Moscow & St Petersburg when I was 14 so I'm jealous too. The closest I get now is my Polish housemates in London (which is very strange, as is my English accent to them) and eavesdropping on Russians on the Tube who don't know I can pick up what they are saying. Wish I'd carried it on really.
I'm intercalating at the moment in London, it's mental. I already miss stoooodent life.

I hadn't planned nothing until the day before the UCAS form deadline, which was around November at our college. I filled in the form on the basis of which city I'd like to live in and the course was a 50-50 out of Maths and Physics, so I asked someone to choose for me. It turned out finecophilie wrote:Got AAAB today so pretty happy. Now I just need to find somewhere to apply to and decide what I want to study...

Although I had a friend in last year who choose his course by flicking through the handbook and ended up with French and Management same as your sister Mummy. He already decided to study at Nottingham because of the canoe facilities, he dropped out last summer, funniest bloke I've ever met.

my decision was basically made after a session in our school careers library looking through the UCAS list for a subject - "ooh Forensic Science, that sounds good, oh and i'll do it at Preston cos that's near Bolton so i can get a season ticket" and my offer was 3 D's or something silly so that was me sorted.
Best way to make a decision i reckon, couldnt have turned out better really
