Re: What are you playing tonight?
When we went to California, son asked us to take some of his old stuff over. "Fish" reminded me of it. Some other foreign language stuff went with it, Deacon Blue, Human League etc. When he said bring fish over I thought that was a bit of an odd request.Always hopeful wrote:Tenuous link alert!!!
Mrs H's cousin is best mates with Fish (the lead singer of Marillion for the uneducated out there). If memory serves me right, they met at a battle re-enactment a few years ago and for some reason "hit it off".

Fish's real name is Derek Dick. I think you got off lightly, Tango, all things considered.TANGODANCER wrote:When he said bring fish over I thought that was a bit of an odd request.

Following on from watching a documentary about him last night; checked out some Tom Jones, (yes really)
There's some great old blues he's done. 'Burning Hell' Being my current fave.

Tom Jones is a singers singer. His early stuff with tracks like Weeping Annaleea, My Elusive Dream, Two Brothers, Have you ever walked through a field of yellow daisies etc, were great singles. If I could have a singing voice it would be his.Il Pirate wrote:Following on from watching a documentary about him last night; checked out some Tom Jones, (yes really)There's some great old blues he's done. Friend of mine is in a band who have just cut their first disc. Really impressed with it - quite Zero Seven-ish. Now if only I knew how to embed an MP 3 file on here you could all have a listen..................

Re: What are you playing tonight?
Following on from the other thread, I've spent all night listening to youtube clips of the Counting Crows live. So. So Good. Still number one on my list of must, must see bands. I've never seen anyone mean a song like Adam Duritz does.

They should be touring here fairly soon - I'd put money on late Spring. Will deffo give you the heads up, chief. And you're absolutely bob-on, there isn't another man alive that can deliver a song like Duritz (or a band that can keep it all together whilst he takes a song wherever he wants to take it).Prufrock wrote:Following on from the other thread, I've spent all night listening to youtube clips of the Counting Crows live. Listening to Fear by John Cale. If I had to choose, I'd probably say he's my favourite Velvet's Alumni.

Re: What are you playing tonight?
I love the Velvets - I got all 5 albums as they came out [top song Sister Ray, top Album VU(3rd) if I had a vote] but I've got to say I've never thought about Velvet alumni. Ok there's obviously Lou, and yes Cale's brought out a few, and I suppose thinking about it there was that thing from Nico sometime in the 80s (?), but were there any other alumni? Did Mo Tucker or any of the others bring out anything else??Beefheart wrote:Listening to Fear by John Cale. If I had to choose, I'd probably say he's my favourite Velvet's Alumni.
I take it from your moniker that Don's a favourite too. - I'm actually listening to that kind of a 'tribute' album "Gimme Dat Harp, Boy" as we type. It's blasting away in the background annoying the f*ck outta my wife with Blind Blake's "Diddie Wah Diddie".

Nico released an album called 'Chelsea Girls'. A few really good tracks, and a few that just seem to be filler. I'd definitely recommend it if you like her voice. She might have done some other stuff but I haven't heard any.Lost Leopard Spot wrote:I love the Velvets - I got all 5 albums as they came out [top song Sister Ray, top Album VU(3rd) if I had a vote] but I've got to say I've never thought about Velvet alumni. I am indeed a fan of the Captain. But haven't heard the album you're talking about.

It's an eclectic mix of stuff that either a) directly inspired Beefheart, or b) is similar in style or substance to Beefheart and c) some really obscure never heard/released before tracks of Beefheart. If you like Beefheart I guarantee you'll like this. It's on CD by Oz records [BS-OZIT CD302]

Ooops. Didn't mean to offend. Just couldn't remember the name of the album, but Beefheart supplied the answer.CAPSLOCK wrote:That thingLost Leopard Spot wrote:I love the Velvets - I got all 5 albums as they came out [top song Sister Ray, top Album VU(3rd) if I had a vote] but I've got to say I've never thought about Velvet alumni.
