You do try your best at that though...bobo the clown wrote:... & that's lovely. Good luck to you. thats the thing tho, its on, up and running and playing a film or on the internet in three touches and the same amount of seconds. not sat there waiting for the old laptop to fire up. shit hot when your on the move alot. it just lives in my bag, completely unobtrusive and ready to be whipped out as and when.
there is not a single iPad owner i know who doesnt think its the bees bollocks. so until you've tried it, youre just in denial.
That's all.
Don't let me stop anyone enjoy themselves.
Meanwhile I will continue to believe I get what I want with non-Apple products and I will still go to Heaven, while you lot won't.

Well, wherever you sit on the subject I thought everyone accepted that Apple put restrictions on how people can use their products.BWFC_Insane wrote:Force customers? How? I think thats a pretty strong statement.
More a question of whether that bothers you than whether it's the case.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

don't be ridiculous - you are more than capable of understanding quite complex things - and more than capable of looking up a "how to do it" site on the internet.
don't come the "poor thicko me" routine - you have already outed yourself as a very capable thinker!

No you said Apple "force customers to use their systems" which implies they force folk to buy them.bobo the clown wrote:Well, wherever you sit on the subject I thought everyone accepted that Apple put restrictions on how people can use their products.BWFC_Insane wrote:Force customers? Which I think is pretty strong.
I think what you mean is that once you've bought an Apple Device you can for example only use iTunes to play media not the system of your choice. Which is slightly different IMO at least.
I'm not convinced that an iPad is as restrictive as you make out like. I mean there is a far bigger app choice in the Apple store than there is with any other app store for example.......

dunno but they are meant to be half laptop/half tab in that you get keyboard with it and it has all MS office programs on there, but the tab side of things, Apps etc - waste of time.boltonboris wrote:Aren't those microsoft things about 600 sheets?General Mannerheim wrote:No it's fair point. You pay for the name. I've not tried other tabs so I don't know. Actually! My brother has one of them Microsoft surface jobs - that's massively shit.Worthy4England wrote:Dunno whether this is the same point or a different one - but something Bobo mentioned earler I think.
I have a tablet - it's not an iPad. It does everything that people on here seem to be mentioning about the iPad (other than fairly obviously access the Apple store). And it was £200 cheaper - can't see what'd be worth £200 to me on an iPad that I haven't got.

So it's just a laptop, but with less memory and more expensive? Ace!

64Gb isn't the memory, it's the storage size. There seems to be a lot of confusion on Apple forums on this.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:To most of us the phrase 're-flash the ROM to Android' might as well be in Swahili!
I have always thought that one of the reasons the Apple products I have had are worth their small premium is that they are idiot-proof for someone like me who isn't all that tech savvy. I'm sure people who know their stuff find it a bit infantile sometimes, but it seems there are othe products for them.
I'm surprised the premium is as much as £200 for genuinely like-for-like specs in terms of screen quality/size/processor etc, Worthy? It's interesting that the 64mb version is your comparison, but because that is more memory than most iPad users feel they need given the move to the cloud etc.

Moving to cloud is unlikely to change the amount of processing required at the Client device (memory) - all cloud is, is network accessible storage (in the context you're using it) - although it's "today's buzzword", think of it as a "collection of shit stored on a network". It's still processed on the device when you use video playback for example. The constraining factor is typically the network bandwidth.
When I got mine - Aug 2011, iPad were only on version 2 so pretty much all the specs are higher on mine - more memory (twice as much), same screen resolution, twice the resolution on the camera, faster CPU etc. The entry level pricing for iPad 2 in the UK was around £439 - 64Gb was rather higher (£555 as far as I can tell). Mine was £350 (List), but i got it for £100...

Not sure that last bit's true - both apps stores have about 700k applications on them - 699,000 of which are pretty much garbage.BWFC_Insane wrote:No you said Apple "force customers to use their systems" which implies they force folk to buy them.bobo the clown wrote:Well, wherever you sit on the subject I thought everyone accepted that Apple put restrictions on how people can use their products.BWFC_Insane wrote:Force customers? Forcing customers to use their proprietary systems does not imply forcing folk to buy them - only in BWFCi land.

The microsoft one does the same. I know GM says he's seen it and doesn't like it, but I've heard a couple of folks who say it is good.Bruce Rioja wrote:I did see an HP thing advertised ont' telly last night that looked quite nifty. I said (it's on this page .... you don't have to go very far to view it) "Apple force customers to use their systems and employ restrictions" ... they force CUSTOMERS not my Auntie Gladys as she wanders up the High Street.
Buy one, or don't .... but don't deny that once in their thrall they keep you there at all costs. It's a tactic &, by all accounts, what they offer is good and broad. But if you already have other systems which make you happy then there is no God-given necessity to move. That is the general tenor of what eye-fans seem to say.
I'm a refusnik ... & quite happy. You are compliant .... & good luck to you.

You wouldn't be living with it for long if it's anything like the build quality of the HP laptops we had here at work.Bruce Rioja wrote:I did see an HP thing advertised ont' telly last night that looked quite nifty. It was a tablet that couples onto a keyboard. Now that I could probably live with.
Re: Technology Thread.
Worthy, did you get the HP one they dumped?
FWIW, I'd have an ipad but too rich for me, so bought the Nexus
Just use it for browsing (and reading a few books as I got some free 'store' credit) and its great for that, but doesn't suit fat fingers - and the store is shit
I guess itunes has more to offer?

Expensive compared to what? The 32Gb MS Surface (tablet only) is cheaper than the iPad 32Gb Tablet. The keyboard bit though adds about £80 onto the price, if bought at the same time or about £100 if bought separately...BWFC_Insane wrote:The microsoft one does the same. The Envy is reassuringly expensive @ £799 but it's tech specs I think are quite a lot higher than the iPad 4...

Not sure how iTunes has more to offer - given it ties you into iTunes format and once you're connected on an open OS, I can shop at HMV - or if the mood took me could just d'ld from Pirate Bay.

Just got a new HP laptop at work. The keyboard is absolutely shite - so much so that now when I'm at work I run a remote Microsoft keyboard through it as the built in one just misses out letters, two at a time normally. I thought it was just that I'd landed a baddun, but obviously not.Little Green Man wrote:You wouldn't be living with it for long if it's anything like the build quality of the HP laptops we had here at work.Bruce Rioja wrote:I did see an HP thing advertised ont' telly last night that looked quite nifty. Sorry I was talking about the pro one that has windows 8 on it.A couple of colleagues saw it demoed and tested it a while ago. I had no idea it wasn't released yet. Clearly its specs are well above iPads, its a very different beast.Worthy4England wrote:Expensive compared to what? The 32Gb MS Surface (tablet only) is cheaper than the iPad 32Gb Tablet. Re: Technology Thread.
Asus Transformer is better IMO. I've the original one and it is pretty good. I use my laptop mostly, but the tablet is handy for some things and having a proper keyboard on it helps. It also has a 2nd battery in the keyboard, meaning I get about 16 hours battery life.Bruce Rioja wrote:I did see an HP thing advertised ont' telly last night that looked quite nifty. Windows 8, which is running (if you can call it that) on my laptop is shit. Really really really shit. It crashes multiple times a day. Windows update doesn't work. The new interface I can live with, but it is a bit meh...
