Re: the Photo thread
A dolphin usually has a pointed snout (beak) A porpoise snout is short and blunt like a cartoon fish sketch
The leading edge of the fin on a dolphin's back is shaped like a curling wave The leading edge of a porpoise's back fin is straight.
Dolphins have pointed cone-shaped teeth Porpoise teeth are flat, spade shaped, with upper edges that are long and sharp
Dolphins grow up to 12 feet long Porpoises are usually less than 7 feet long
Dolphins are longer and sleeker in shape Porpoises are shorter and more compact
Dolphins produce sounds we can hear (and are talkative!) Porpoise sounds are inaudible to us
Dolphins have much less fear of humans - will ride the waves alongside boats Porpoises are shy - you are much less likely to see one - wild or captive. Rarely seen at surface unless up to breathe.
Dolphins live in large groups Porpoises live in pods of 2 - 4
Dolphins can live for more than 50 years Porpoises do not live long past the age of 15
Dolphins are rubbish at fancy dress Porpoises are masters of disguise and can impersonate any sea creature

Yeah, but I heard porpoises support Wolves and have no sense of humour (understandable supporting that lot)...

Looks like his beam went above Orion but an interesting shot. I love this thread and am impressed by the talents of bish, Clappers, Raven, etc. I don't understand half the tech talk but enjoy the results.

Re: the Photo thread
I am gonna try this head torch idea one day..
also - there is a lighting technique (for night time when it is dark) where you wear dark clothes (so you won't be seen) set the camera on a proper long exposure and then run around turning a torch on and off to illuminate parts of the scene...
here's an ace version of Bobos mate's torch into the sky photo...

Well, your mate's wrong. Orion's in the image but it's about one-third in from the left and a little over one-third down. The light beam, apart from not pointing in that direction, is also pointing too high. [Pedantry over].bobo the clown wrote:Not my photo, regrettably, but a mates. Whoops! So you did, Monty. My apologies, good sir. I quoted bobo's post and missed this page altogether.

Fck guys. Is there not enough to do in the colonies ?
I only meant in the general area of Orion ... there were 2 more. Maybe one of those hit it. It was meant as a general reference not an entry into a space version spot the ball.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

He's aiming his beam towards the constellation that is above and to the left of Orion, which is Gemini.
To be specific, the centre of his beam is aimed squarely at Pollux. I think I win the spot the star competition.

Re: the Photo thread
I have got to get myself one of the Lee Big Stoppers! I have wanted to create that ghostly effect at a waterfall or the beach several times but didn't have the tools to do it. Expensive though. Even on eBay it will cost around £200+ for the stopper and holder and then I'd need a 77mm adapter. I've been meaning to get a graduated filter for some time though so I reckon its time to get them and not worry about the cost.

the Lee Big Stopper is a whole 10-stop ND filter... they are expensive..
I have a 7dayshop variable ND filter - which goes up to 8stops - which is more than enough for a blurred waterfall!
a professional would turn his/her nose up at it... but - for a limited-use filter (there are only so many blurred waterfalls and seascapes you need to take!) it is a good start to play about with...
in fact - this is the one I have - with which I took the Lepe Porpoises shot... (only I have the 52mm version)

in fact - I only have two filters - the variable ND filter and a cheapish Polarising filter...

Re: the Photo thread
Just my taste, personal to me, but I've never been that taken with the blurred soft waterfall effect. In fact I strive for the opposite where each and every runnel and droplet is frozen in place and crystal defined. As the water leaps about it can vary enormously from second to second and can give a powerful impression of movement through capturing the very essence of its 'plastinicity' through its enforced captured stillness.
Having said that I can see it can be a useful tool, as in Bish's non-dolphin dolphin's shot.

....whereas this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hoya-Neutral-De ... B00111UX40" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is what I have. I think it's either an 8 or 9 stop. Quite a bit cheaper than the Big Stopper. You'll see from my photo a few pages back that I was slightly disappointed that the filter wasn't darker, but as Bish says, 8-9 stops should be sufficient for most circimstances:thebish wrote:clapton is god wrote:I have got to get myself one of the Lee Big Stoppers! For what porpoise? To pretend it's a dolphin maybe? Have you thought of that eh? The picture of a dolphin could be a porpoise in disguise? Mmmmmmmmm
I really should be trying to do some work........

I can confirm that's what he said and he's an apprentice sea-kayaker so you'd think he'd know about things nautical.
