The story used to be that Oxbridge tutors in pure maths used to have an annual dinner where the toast was to their subject - and may it never be any use to anyone...

Unlike poetry, of course...

Just watched an hour long documentary on Mark Knopfler on BBC4, and now Jools Holland's hour of Knopfler in concert with a host of talented musicians. . Great stuff

Don of a man. Brothers in arms, in the top five highest selling albums of all time. That's a big wow from me.

For what it's worth:

Brothers in Arms charted #1 worldwide, spent fifteen weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart, and nine weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 in the U.S. It is the fourth best-selling album in UK chart history, is certified nine times platinum in the United States, and is one of the worlds best selling albums having sold 30 million copies worldwide.[

top three world-wide sellers are..

(NO PRIZES FOR THESE!)

whacko jacko - Thriller - in a league of its own - about 110million sales

AC/DC - back in black - a respectable head of the rest of the pack - 49 million sales

Floyd - dark side of the moon - about 45 mill sales..

Brothers in arms did about 30million in sales - all to middle aged men - and in the same year Windows 1.0 was released...

in between - ie before you'd get to Brothers in arms, you'd have... (just picking a few - and in no particular order...)

Led Zeppelin IV
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Bat Out of Hell
Saturday Night Fever
Rumours
Born in the U.S.A.

and (errr.... really???)

Whitney Houston - the bodyguard
celine deon - Falling into You
alanis morisette - Jagged Little Pill
Mariah Carey - Music Box :conf:

Not at all, your very vicarage. I received Brothers in Arms from one of my brothers for my 19th Birthday, and with the exception of two of them I've never even listened to any of the album's you list, let alone own any of them.
The talent of Mark Knopfler transcends simple stereotype (or so I thought).

today I am mostly being crippled by a bad back..

so - I downloaded One Million Years BC - cos my kids have never been introduced to the iconic film! I forced them to watch it with me at gunpoint - giant spider - scary turtle and giant iguana 'n all!

oh - it has Raquel Welsh in it too....

suffice it to say - while they enjoyed scoffing at it - and it was great entertainment for an hour or so - they were less than impressed with the special effects!

(I remember being impressed by that big scary dinosaur fight when i was a kid!!!)

tsk... kids of today eh?

There's a couple of special effects in that picture that look pretty good to me.
