After a spa weekend at Ribby Hall in Kirkham (Highly recommended BTW -Excellent spa, great rooms and food to die for - Grilled fillet of cod with sorrell and shellfish foam - historic) tonight it's a simple Risotto. A few lightly fried mushrooms, spring onions and peas with a little spinach and parmesan shavings. I'm so middle class.

Went to the Wilton earlier.....glazed chipolatas to share, followed by penne arrabiata, was quite good actually.

The Wilton used to be my local - disco on a Friday and a Sunday, oh yes, but then they turned it into an eaterie. Last time I went in I'd taken my mum for a nosebag and it were shite, so, glad to learn that it must've improved then.

We took my mum out for her tea. Have been a few times.....this was the best it's been.

Went our for beer at the Dunscar Arms with two mates... company good... beer ok... pub close to empty... pile of total, total drunks in one corner... drunk as drunk can be, then drunker, then a couple on top, with a chaser... Talking scribble then trying to get violent with each other... One of my mates, observing the good night out, said that he'd seen a BBC4 thing on the history of Britain... and how shocked the Normans had been on discovering that even the smallest place had a house called the ale-house...

We expressed our own shock, of course, then got the next round...

made chocolate muffins cos my daughter likes them - and was nice for her to find summat freshly baked when she came home from her exam..

but - then realised that middle son doesn't like choc cake or choc muffins - so had to think of another kind of muffin to make..

stumbled across a recipe for apple and custard muffins...

and I have to say - YUM!! awesometastic!!

he's not often excited by a new food - being a very cautious eater - but having proclaimed himself sceptical - he took a bite and announced - "Mmmm... they're rather tasty!" - which is high praise from him!!

I love it... With a new malt I take a sip without water, then with a little drop - or two - of fine Lancashire tap... And am always deeply satisfied at what the water does to it... on the nose, on the tongue, on the finish... I have (idiot) friends who think adding water to malt is some kind of sacrilege... Your Scots mates are right...

Had proper home made Swedish meatballs and sauce last night. Absolutely magnificent. Going to have a blast at making it myself one day. Served with boiled spuds and carrots. That shit that they serve up at ikea is an absolute abomination!

It's my cousin's 50th this weekend and I'm thinking of buying him a good bottle of malt. Seeing as I can't stand the stuff, have you lot any recommendations? I don't mind spending a few quid but would prefer something a little unusual/different or seldom seen?

See if you can pick up a Caol Ila, Bob. If your finances can run to a 12 year-old then even better. It's an Islay that's full of flavour but is light on that dreadful burned peat taste that Laphroaig drinkers seem to find a plus point. If you want pure excellent balance then Ardbeg's probably the one. (Though Dalwhinnie is my call every single time, regardless of owt ).
