What's wrong with sticking them on in the bag?

My knee hurts today - especially going up and down stairs.
Did you google Illiotibial Band Syndrome? If your symptoms compare (and your initial description seems to fit) then there are some useful exercises you can do.
Says if you've upped your running recently it could be a cause... I have, and i have started playing football again.
Treatment involves rest from runningstretches, massage of the thigh and calf, RICE and anti inflam drugs. Not sure i need all of them yet but i guess i should heed it as a warning sign. Does say it could be a sign your trainers are too worn, so i'm gonna treat me to a new pair just to help heal my knee, you understand
Have you ever suffered it yourself GtE?
Briefly. Rest is, of course, the best treatment. Changing shoes if they are worn and getting a proper gait analysis to make sure you're not pronating will help too.
As for recovery you need to stretch PROPERLY both before and after exercise and concentrate on stretching the ITB. There are loads of different programmes out there. RICE is fine but to speed the healing you could try contrast bathing.
You can alternate with Ice and a hot water bottle at 5 minute intervals (remember to wrap the ice in a towel) 3 x Ice and 2X heat in between
The ice will reduce inflammation and the heat will stimulate blood flow to the area which will promote healing.
Good luck.

Bish, Pru. As I found to my cost, if you just rest said bag of frozen veg directly onto the skin, you burn the skin quite badly.

1st run tonight for nearly 3 weeks. A steady 4 miler with just a few aches and pains.
We spent the weekend in Wales watching the Snowdonia Marathon. We'd already booked a B&B so despite injury ending our chances of taking part, it was great to get away and cheer on all the entrants. Would have loved to have been doing it though

Re: The athletics/running thread
5k race last at Hog Hill Cycle Circuit near Hainault.
Pleased with the time (21:54) as it's 32 seconds faster than on the same track last year.
The difference with this race is it's in the dark. We run by star (and moon) light or, if there is cloud cover, by the reflected light of Canary Wharf across the river some 4 or five miles away. There are no lights apart from the pavillion which is out of view for 4/5ths of the course.
It's an exhillirating experience and some of the downhill sections need extra concentration.

Knee held out through very gentle 5km and footy training this week. Might just hold off the longer runs for a while, had to turn down playing at the weekend anyway, as off to rescue chickens with Bish!

Off to do Stevenage Half Marathon in an hour. Hopefully I'll be too tired to notice the result.

The lengths to which you go in order to to duck your round are quite extrordinary.Gary the Enfield wrote:Off to do Stevenage Half Marathon in an hour.

Good luck GtE.
Had a great run this morning over the moors at Winter Hill. Beautiful weather, with views right across to the coast. Lots of runners, cyclists, dog walkers and families out there. A great day to be alive

Good luck!
This is (was) my 10th half marathon. My PB (at Bath 2 years ago) is 1hr 36 mins 45 secs.
Today I did 1hr 39 mins and 18 secs. Very pleased considering it's a more undulating course and I having run this far since March.
And Bruce?

Edit: Official (chip) time 1:39:02. Brilliant!
