Big things huh? I don't see it.Bruce Rioja wrote:Any of you hip and happening crazy cats familiar with a band from Warrington called Exile Parade? They're currently being touted, by some, to be destined for big things. They sound like an Oasis tribute band to me.

The Shocking Miss Emerald, Caro Emerald's new album. Going to see her at Lowry in September, looking forward to it. I do like a jazzy female vocalist.

Confused sort of album I felt. She's very good, but the range of styles in this ... I'm sure intended to broaden the album ... just made it a bit muddled for me.LeverEnd wrote:The Shocking Miss Emerald, Caro Emerald's new album. She IS very good though.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I will have nothing bad said about Polly. Absolute joy to listen to again and again and the lyrics are obvious...Il Pirate wrote:BL3 wrote:Talking of X-Ray Spex, this punk classic was screened a couple of weeks ago on BBC Four in a repeat episode of TOTP from 1978 alongside the likes of Brotherhood of Man and Elkie Brooks, who probably inhabit a some sort of beige coloured world. I clambered over mounds and mounds of polystyrene foam
And fell into a swimming pool filled with fairy snow
...and watched the world turn day-glo
you know you know the world turned day-glo you know ohhh oh o
I wrenched the nylon curtains back as far as they would go
And peered through perspex window panes at the acrylic road
(verse)
I drove my polypropolene car on wheels of sponge
Then pulled into a wimpy bar to have a rubber bun
(verse)
The X-rays were penetrating through the laytex breeze
Synthetic fibre see-thru leaves fell from the rayon trees
That's not a leopard!

Only 400 of them available, £1,649. I wish I could justify buying one.

Re: What are you playing tonight?
Splurged in the bargain bin at HMV t'other day. First Mumfords because I don't have it and they're cool; Them Crooked Vultures which I feared could only disappoint and is actually pretty damn good; and, recent Bad Religion album, which isn't great - they sound like an 80's power band parody of themselves at points - but which has some pretty ace redeeming moments. All for £14.

Hard to disagree with the last bit. I've got an LP of Ella singing the Gershwin songbook, absolutely fantastic.TANGODANCER wrote:A real singer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aZEkpg4SU8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The love affair began for me in Billy Baker's dance club on Bradshawgate, when I was just sixteen ( the year of our Lord 1955) and first heard the lady. My number one ever since and always will be, athough she's sadly passed away now.LeverEnd wrote:Hard to disagree with the last bit. That's a while ago! 20 years before I was born in fact. I had a girlfriend who used to listen to her. I had very narrow tastes at the time but listening to that was a real eye-opener. or ear-opener I suppose.

When I used to listen to my girlfriend's shit music about 20 years ago, it wasn't about it being an eye-opener.LeverEnd wrote:That's a while ago! 20 years before I was born in fact.
