kinda boils down to what you mean by "abuse"... if not stopping a 14 yr old from drinking leads to neglect charges in court - then I ssupect most of us would have been in care while our parents were in prison...

Wouldn't disagree there. But we talk about duty of care seemingly for everyone except parents. The people whose responsibility it becomes when parents have trouble coping, but still continue to chrun out sprogs (and those who don't). I'm sure it wouldn't be a black and white distinction, my daughter who's nearly 18 got the biggest rollocking she's ever had for coming home pissed when she was 16. She got grounded for 6 months, let out for good behaviour after 3 (soft arsed bastard that I am). It seems to have cured it. So mea culpa - I'm not suggesting people get no chances.

You can never win on these things.

Half the population think that not rights deserve a good kicking and that rules that stop this from happening prevent the likes of teachers, police, wardens etc from adequately protecting themselves.

The other half think that those rules protect the categories of people listed above from abusing their powers and dishing out kickings when and where they feel like.

Argument will never be resolved IMHO!
