... & take a look at the biblical scale mess the Socialist Republic of Wales is making of its fully devolved NHS. That's due to decisions, politics and poor, poor processes. They chuck enough money at it. It ain't down to that.

Even the Cymraeg have finally stopped denying it's in a mess with 3 out of 6 Authorities in special measures. 50% .... not that "special" really, is it ?
There are a load of reasons for the problems in wales. However, many aspects of health provision in Wales are better than in England. Waiting lists however, are not.

The principle reason for this, is again a lack of funding. The Tories blame Welsh Labour and Welsh Labour blame the Tory cuts. Whatever the reason like the rest of the UK the costs are rising far quicker than the budget allows for.

Ambulances are another statistic commonly cited by the right, which again is a nonsense. Comparing ambulance response times in mainly rural and disconnected Wales to urban areas in England...yeah sounds a good comparison.

But however you slice it, the NHS cannot sustain it's services without appropriate funding. We are seeing that now, more clearly than ever.

As for your last point as far as I knew 1 of the 7 Welsh health boards were in special measures. Not sure where the 3 in 6 comes from?
Correct. Over the past 3 years 3 in 7, Apologies. Plus every single one is overspent, some quite dramatically.

When did you become expert in defending the farrago that is the Welsh NHS ?

40% of Welsh devolved public spending is on the NHS. It's still in debt. I'd argue that there is, simply, no limit to what could be spent in Health given a free hand.

When, for political reasons, they decide that there should be ONE Authority for the whole of North Wales, when it's deemed appropriate to have only two specialist maternity units for that whole area. When the decision is made that North Wales acute heart care should no longer be in Liverpool, but be in Swansea .... really, Swansea the crazy thinking becomes clear.

This s a wholly divested part of Wales. They are the ones who determine the budget and how it's spent .... & it is spent disastrously. So much so that the Chair of the Health Authority moves to live in London, and rents a flat near her sister, when she wants cancer care which is unavailable in her Authority.

It's lovely that there are free prescriptions ... except that means people arrange appointments to go to their doctor and get scrips for items costing a pittance at the local supermarket or pharmacy. he old, the young, the invalid, the multi-item long-termers, the poor would all get free drugs anyway. So it's not the huge social deal they make it, but the impact on level of usage of GP's is phenomenal.

They set a budget from what is devolved but the point is their overall budget has been cut since 2010. Health costs are rising and less is available in real terms. Wherever you are that problem exists.

So, much as we ALL want a terrific health service at what point do you say "we can't spend any more" ??.40% of the overall public spend is bloody enormous.

I'd suggest stopping a lot of the elective stuff would be a start. "You want a tattoo removing madame .... then you paid to have it, you can pay to be rid of it".

"Tit job ? .... Off you go petal. I'll get you some addresses".

Though children are important surely 3 lots of IVF has to be what is taken as the publically funded max.

There really us no limit to what people could spend .... there are, however, limits to how much can be afforded. It means difficult decisions. But before we start cutting stuff they can begin by being more efficient.

2 weeks ago I attended a seminar of recent Employment Law (my life is a thrill a minute). At it there were 8 .... EIGH, HR types from one hospital. 2 of them had attended the same presentation at another location the day before. It's a tiny example but they are prolific in their careless spending.

Here's a thing: Eating large amounts of fried or bbq'd meat could double your risk of developing kidney cancer...
Well fxck me!
Being alive significantly increases the chance you will die of cancer. Tis a fact. One not trumpeted by the current crop of wankers compiling lists of shit that can kill you because of an increased risk of cancer. I need to know what is FXCKIN TOXIC, not what may or may not lead me to fart one more time when I'm eighty and therefore develop a polyp which will kill you when you're ninety...

My apologies. Those 79 families I mentioned are responsible for 10% of the ambulance trust budget. Frequent flyers they're known as, mainly alcoholics or druggies with chaotic lives. Either way, it's a grim statistic!

Perfect example of how shit science reporting is, sometimes through incompetence, sometimes through dishonest sensationalism.

Headline screams eating processed foods increases your risk of bowel cancer by 18%. People think "f*ck, 18% is a lot!". Except 18% more of a tiny chance is still a tiny chance. I think the whole life risk of bowel cancer is about 6%, so eat bacon and it becomes a little more than 7%.

I'll take that risk, ta, for bacon.

There's a good book called The Tiger That Isn't which deals with the media abusing stats. Well worth a read.

Re the top part. I agree. Somehow we need to define what the NHS does, what we want it to do and what we are prepared to pay for.

A lot of NHS budget is used caring for the elderly. Is that what we want? With you on IVF in that I've never really thought that should be on the NHS. The trouble is there aren't blanket easy cases. I would personally find it hard to deny someone who can't have kids because of a serious illness (now recovered) if they're a genuine case. But then someone who just cant have them are in reality just as deserving. But kids aren't a human right. Nor a health issue.

But equally where is the line drawn? Sickness can often be self inflicted to some extent. Whereas being infertile is almost never anyone's fault. Does the Mars bar muncher get treated for diabetes but the infertile lady get told to go packing with her IVF? And what if the diabetes patient had a bad diet once but now is health personified?

This should probably be in the angry thread but I though I'd check. Ahead of starting a new job on Monday I've just come across the term 'onboarding'. Onboarding? fecking onboarding? On-board is in no way a verb is it? Onboarding!

No new thing B. Before I retired our publicity manager was full of such speak. I think he was the original tree-shaker. I also think all these terms arrived with Cafe Nero opening in Manchester.

American company I take it.

Roll with it. Don't tilt at windmills & life will be smoother ... albeit surrounded by the constant whiff of bullshit.

Yes, an American company, how on earth did you guess?! :D I just don't get what's wrong with the word 'induction', for example.

Neither do I. But it's what they use and it doesn't damage your life in any way.

.... & that is unbearable then what's to come isn't going to please you. As I said, don't tilt at windmills, or it'll end badly.
