Is this irony? Or, for real, the name of a music venue???Bruce Rioja wrote:I feel I must apologise for the rash stupidity of the above comments. Sunday 91 by Annie Eve is a fecking masterpiece. 10 brilliantly crafted individual songs - I've fallen in love with each and every one of them. To give a WtW type appraisal - Hushed. Intense. Intelligent. Beautiful. She's playing at The Deaf Institute on 17th Oct - I need to check my diary. She's only 22. I own socks that are older than that!!!!Bruce Rioja wrote:First couple of listens of Annie Eve's debut album, Sunday '91. A perfectly pleasant listen but bar a couple of tracks none of it's unremarkable. However, it's bound to take additional listenings and further attention if it's going to reveal nuances - certainly more attention than me listening to it in the car going to work and back.

Great venue just off Oxford Road, no longer inhabited by deaf people (although I'm sure they are allowed in!). Three levels to it, the concert room being on the top floor, with a little balcony. Saw Lucero there a few months ago. I love watching bands in little places like that.

It's a cracking little venue, Will. Perfect for those armed with little more than an acoustic guitar.William the White wrote:Is this irony? You have issues KS.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

It's a tune, and no denying. Some other decent toe-tappers as well on the album I listened to. Falls away towards the end though.
(I could go back to listening to stuff like this if it'll make you feel more comfortable, bobo? Warning, it's a bit loud)

Excellent stuff Bob. If you want to go upbeat a little, throw in a couple of banjos.Bijou Bob wrote:This. Never really been into folk music, but this is so unbeardy, it's fantastic.

Gorgeous voice this girl, and your link led me to a hauntingly beautiful version of She Moved through the Fair, a lifetime favourite of mine, so doubly good.

Cycled round Northern France with a mate in 1977. Only two bearable songs on every bloody jukebox in any given cafe or bar were 'Yes Sir, I can Boogie' (a few months before it broke on this side of the channel) and the Eagles, 'Hotel California'.

Had a go at listening to U2's free album yesterday. Got about half way through it before giving up.

Strictly last night had Jamie Cullum and Greg Porter doing the old Animals release (previously Nina Simone) Oh Lord, Please don't let me be misunderstood". Liked it.

My current ear-worm is the old original version of 'the Banana Boat Song'.
Great piece, if these days probably viewed as marginally racist. I have had it in my ear for a week and it's going nowhere.
Great for the shower though.

Can you remember what finally killed you off mainstream pop? I think, for me, it was when my lad came home with a copy of Karma Chameleon. I never quite got over the shock.

And yet behind the façade he had one of the best soul voices around at the time.
Listen to Time (Clock of the heart) or Church of the Poisoned Mind with backing vocals from Helen Terry.
Not a soul music or Culture Club fan but I do like Boy George's voice.

No, as nothing's ever turned me onto it, although I did quite like The Thompson Twins at one point.TANGODANCER wrote:Can you remember what finally killed you off mainstream pop?
