Off to watch Tom Vek tonight. First saw him in Manchester Academy Three 10(!) years ago, touring his first album. Only done two more since then, the lazy get.

FYI Enablers are hitting Manchester in April and so too are Kayo Dot - not together though sadly! So that's something!
On Sunday it's Dope Body at Islington Mill. Then in the next few months the likes of Retox, Nissenmondai, Sleater Kinney, Sun Ra Arkestra (again!), Flying Lotus, Kim Gordon (spoken), GYBE!, Corrosion of Conformity & Weedeater to name just a few are playing gigs!
Manchester does alright for gigs. Good scene.
Right now I'm listening to Slint and my thoughts are with Dave Pajo

Never seen them live before, can't wait! Will be deaf the next day i imagine
Ah nice one, well at least you get to see them!
Nice line up, interested to see how Sleater Kinney are, briefly listened to the new record and still seemed pretty good. Used to spend a lot of money in my college days going to shows the academies, found some right good'uns there (as well as some shite).
Just read that about Dave Pajo, f*ckin hell. At least he's with his loved ones i guess, thoughts with him.
Hookworms playing Rough Trade NYC in April. Hmm.

Albums released in 1985 that still sound good today.
There are a good few on the list that I still listen to regularly.

Re: What are you playing tonight?
The new Sleater Kinney record is absolutely one of their best, so the gig is going to be mega!
Sun Kil Moon just announced for the RNCM in July too. Yes!! (although he'll probably cancel it due to tiredness/boredom on the day)
Today I'm listening to my own playlist which consists of a lot of these fine chaps:
Please note the first comment on this video - that is NOT how I got into this musical act.

Saw Royal blood support the Pixies in summer, was really impressed. Then had a listen to thr album and it didn't really grab me. Keep meaning to give it another go.

I own 2 of those albums:
Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy and the Lash
I don't feel any the poorer for not owning any of the others.

Surprised you don't own Love by The Cult, fella. I also own Little Creatures - Talking Heads, Steve McQueen - Prefab Sprout, Easy Pieces - Lloyd Cole and The Commotions, Night Time - Killing Joke, Once Upon a Time - Simple Minds. I also own Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits which I bought in the hope that it'd all be like Money for Nothing, which, of course, it isn't!

I have a confession to make. I don't ACTUALLY own either of the above. They came into my vinyl collection in 1989 via Mrs GtE.
Not a big fan of The Cult. I tend to lump them in with the Almighty, Big Country and The Alarm
Bombastic Rock with little substance. In fact most '80s music leaves me cold. Ska and Two Tone, New Romantics, (the dying remnants of) Punk, Garage, House, Hip Hop largely passed me by.
No. Gimme NWOBHM any day. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon, UFO, Uriah Heep, Nazareth, Budgie, Ozzy, and not forgetting the revitalised Glam rock from stateside of Motley Crue, Poison, Van Halen, Twisted Sister, Cinderella etc. etc. etc.

With most songs written and recorded, but never, ever, credited by Timothy B Smicht, bassist for the Eagles.

Those bands all "have substance"? I think we'll just agree to disagree on that one, Chap.Gary the Enfield wrote:Bruce Rioja wrote:Well you areGary the Enfield wrote:Bruce Rioja wrote:Albums released in 1985 that still sound good today.

As if I didn't already have enough reasons to hate the bassist from The Eagles.

There's a couple on that (main) list I've never heard of!Bruce Rioja wrote:Well you areGary the Enfield wrote:Bruce Rioja wrote:Albums released in 1985 that still sound good today.

I reckon most of those listed are albums with occasional great songs on them, rather than great albums. I didn't have you down for the super-saccharine Prefab (but then again, I have "Songs from the Big Chair" and even a-Ha are loitering somewhere round the house). I do have Meat is Murder, but for most of the others, it's tracks on compilations mainly.
I listened to Brothers in Arms, before not spending hard cash on it - although I wish it had all been as good as the title track, rather than the pop-track.
It's good to see the one that has the Conti Club's anthem (Whole of the Moon) on it.
