With my BT Infinity I get the full advertised 80/20 speed but only wired. With wireless it's more like 30 odd down... I probably could muck about with it a bit to try and improve this, but it's no big deal.
well, it's wired from the junction box & into the pc. Wireless throughout the rest of the house.

We are a good way from the exchange & I believe that impacts the speed.

tbh - it is such an improvement to what we are used to I was pretty pleased. We'd been projected onlt 17-18mbps, so it seemed OK. Any advice offered is welcome, but the BT guy showed us through the set-up & he measured it.

We're with Virgin and the wife's laptop tells her she's getting 39. Mine, I don't know as there's nothing there to tell me. Where do you find that info?

There are sites that will test it for free, Tango - try a few Google searches to find them.

Ours is 57mps on the wireless - it actually hadn't even occurred that it might be better wired in.

And I'm in Sydenham these days, Bobo, which used to be considered part of Kent - not exactly the centre of the metropolis.

Touché. I'm just grumpy because it was a wrench to leave a place I was living on Fetter Lane (just off Fleet Street).

Thanks Malc, already checked. It seems particularly low in our area, as low as 6.5, but I'm not really suffering any noticable difference. Seems fine so I'm happy.

Is there a 'ctrl f' type function on the ipad, for finding certain words in documents or websites?

Right, so thinking about a new TV. Currently have a 40" LCD that does pretty well, but its started buzzing a bit and I think its probably on its last legs. And fancy a new one anyhow...

So took a look to see what size TV was recommended for my room, given I sit roughly 9ft from the TV. Looked here.... http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/Article/How-F ... -I-Sit.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So apparently 9ft is "off the scale" and 8.5ft would be a bloody 64". As much as I'm prepared to buy a 64" if thats what it takes, I'm thinking it would involve a new TV stand a re-organisation of the room to fit the bloody thing in, and a very irate woman when "she" sees the bill.

Based on sitting that distance (which I assume is not really strange) what would anyone on here advise?

I only watch HD content.....

Brother in law has a 55" and I'm usually sat miles away from it; it is fine. To be honest, I'd either concentrate on a good quality picture and decent sound (so many tvs have shit sound), or if you want to go large get a decent projector. The bigger the tv screen the better the quality it needs to be and therefore starts to get expensive.

Mine is a 40" and I'm sat about about 7ft away. Again, it is perfectly fine. Certainly better than the tiny tvs we managed with in the 70s and 80s :D

I have an external sound system so I'm not bothered about the TV speakers.

The trouble is that all the specialist TV/Video sites all give you the buy a £990000000000000000000 TV advice. Which is fine for those who have a keen interest in that stuff, and I do a bit, but not to the extent of an unhappy wife and a living room re-design to accomodate it.

What do you think on LED/LCD vs Plasma? I've had a gander at both and prefer the look of the picture on the LED/LCD. However, the experts again will say thats wrong and merely down to how the sets are setup in the shops.

I wish Apple would just hurry up and bring out their TV  (joking).

Only had 2 TV's since the death of my old CRT one, both plasma........no issues with them. However, the only downside is you need to spend a little time "breaking them in".....otherwise you could end up with image burn/retention.

Lounge, 32" TV, sat 9 or 10 feet away. No bother. Living room (where I mainly watch) 26", sat 8 feet away. No bother at all. Move your chair nearer the set.

Well indeed.

I think the argument goes that if you're paying for HD signal (in my case Sky) and an HD TV there is a relationship between viewing distance and screen size that allows you to appreciate the "extra HD detail". Which I guess makes sense. Not much point having a tiny HD screen if you sit so far away that you can't make out the details that HD brings to the surface.

I just think the guide I posted seems quite extreme.

I fancy going bigger than 40" but didn't envisage going above 50".

Breaking in? How do you do that? Whip them slowly until they work flawlessly?
