You need to especially look out for the 'hoods where foinichure is stacked against the brownstones.Bruce Rioja wrote:Looking like Monday to Friday now, Monty, but yes - I can imagine I'll get a taste for it and then be impatient to return at a later date.Montreal Wanderer wrote:a long weekend will not be enough.
Of course it is a shithole....
And I'd be disappointed if it's anything but.

And hopefully there'll be a nearby Gwass-o-leen plant to have the place stink like a shithouse door on a tuna boat.Lost Leopard Spot wrote:You need to especially look out for the 'hoods where foinichure is stacked against the brownstones.Bruce Rioja wrote:Looking like Monday to Friday now, Monty, but yes - I can imagine I'll get a taste for it and then be impatient to return at a later date.Montreal Wanderer wrote:a long weekend will not be enough.

Re: Today I'm happy about......
Bruce, although it's 14 years since my last visit I still have many vivid memories of the place.
Of course they still had the Twin Towers then so that's out. I believe ground zero is worth the trip, though.
When you go to see the Statue of Liberty (and you will) don't bother getting off at Liberty Island, you can't (couldn't) go up inside the statue anymore and you'll get a decent New York skyline shot from the boat. Instead get off at Ellis Island and visit the old immigration centre. They have a fascinating exhibition there of the people who have arrived in New York for the last 150 years or so. The amount and the ethnic diversity through the years is displayed and quite a surprise.
Definitely do Central Park in the daytime. Times Square and Broadway are best seen at night.
Go early if you want to go up the Empire State Building. It opens about 08:30 but the queue starts before that.
Eat, drink and be merry. New York is the most fantastic shithole I've ever been to.

Um I haven't been to NYC. I have been to a couple of less exciting places in America.Bruce Rioja wrote:And hopefully there'll be a nearby Gwass-o-leen plant to have the place stink like a shithouse door on a tuna boat.Lost Leopard Spot wrote:You need to especially look out for the 'hoods where foinichure is stacked against the brownstones.Bruce Rioja wrote:Looking like Monday to Friday now, Monty, but yes - I can imagine I'll get a taste for it and then be impatient to return at a later date.Montreal Wanderer wrote:a long weekend will not be enough.

Fair enough.
What AT said about the subway is absolutely true.
The best advice if you're walking is the streets run East/West and the Avenues run North/South.
Oh, and go to Greenwich Village and catch some live music. Fantastic!

Bruce, if there's a few of you give this a peep.

One of the best nights of my life. Italian 'cucina' style restaurant. Went in, were placed at a big table and, frankly, were overwhelmed by the menu. So many options. Agreed a $40 ph "bring food" arrangement ... and by fck, they did "bring food". Pasta, breads, veg, roast meats, grilled meats, ribs, big 'dive-in' forno pasta's. Topped up with carafe's of wine and beers. No hassle, great gnosh.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

One place I'm sorry I didn't get to. That and Dodgers Stadium, the Bronx Zoo, Madison Square Garden, Coney Island, Rockaway Beach and Atlantic City.

It closed in 2005.
It was a toilet ... more or less literally.

Home to the Ramones, Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop, Blondie and many many more. No worse than some dives I've been in the UK. Certainly better than Sundowners I imagine.

Re: Today I'm happy about......
If you're looking for somewhere to stay I can highly recommend http://www.airbnb.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I used it when staying in New York, as did my parents when they visited, as well as a ton of other places and always had good experiences. Cheaper than hotels. I would say, you might not want to stay in the area of The Bronx that my mate and I did.Bruce Rioja wrote:Oh there is - Youri Djorkaeff owns the Grape and Vine restaurant in the Jade Hotel.Prufrock wrote:Pfft. Allegedly, the Manchester youth leagues are full of them. 4 years ago, my son played against a team from Walkden whose supposedly under 14's forward was 6'1 and around 12 stone with 3 days beard growth. The lad had scored over 30 goals in less than ten matches.bwfcdan94 wrote:African players pretending to be 17 when they are actually 41 again.

My lad (GK) went straight through him in the first 5 minutes, resulting in him being carried off. I tried soooo hard not to be proud

Uma mesa para um, faz favor. Obrigado.

I don't know why it has had this effect, but seeing something outdated at work labeled as 'defunked' has made me grin a lot.

Good for him and don't feel bad about being proud in your son. Saying that I can think of 2 lads at my school who were taller than that at 13 and 1 of them did have a beard but he was Nigerian so.....Bijou Bob wrote:Allegedly, the Manchester youth leagues are full of them. 4 years ago, my son played against a team from Walkden whose supposedly under 14's forward was 6'1 and around 12 stone with 3 days beard growth.
