Off to Allentown for work next month, but know little of it apart from that Billy Joel song by the same name and that it's near Philadelphia which I plan on going back to.

Anyone know of anything good to see in the area/restaurants to go to? Recommendations greatly appreciated.

My old Company has its HQ there. Good time to be there. My advice is to fly via Phili. If you MUST go via NYC make it Newark. Certainly not JFK.

See if Erve's Titty-Bar is still going. Extraordinary experience.

Typical American largish suburban town. Loads of good chain restaurants, but also a lot of smaller chains & individual places too. They do like "pubs" & all have good eating. If you want specific, detailed advice drop me a line.

If there a while DO try to get to the Amish area, near Reading but centered on the amazingly named 'Intercourse'.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Cheers, I might ask re: restaurants closer to the time. I've got a weekend inbetween to kill time so I definitely fancy giving the Amish a visit  Cheers.

Erv's titty bar. Curiosity got the better of me. First thing Google upchucked was "Police arrest 13 in prostitution ring".

Good ole Bobe's, keeping the Clowns' end up.

More famous long before Billy Joel. Jo Stafford, The Seekers and The Kingston Trio all did Allentown Jail going back to the 1950's Not the same song as B.J, but Allentown nevertheless :D

I've never heard of Allentown, I'm afraid, and if Billy Joel ever invites me round then I will be starting the fecking fire :)

Got this from Tripadvisor, but will ask colleagues tomorrow for you.

Allentown was an industrial city that had seen better days when I went through it (quickly) 25 years ago. I gather there has been a renaissance and renewal since that time. Still I would be tempted to spend the weekends in Philly, the City of Brotherly Love. Sure! They are a tough sporting crowd - they even boo the peanut vendor, but historic Philly is interesting and much more nightlife than places like Allentown.

Bethlehem, next door, is the industrial area. A large steel works dominates it. The city of Allen town is very white collar and has a range of high class suberbs.

Anyway, I must have visited 15-20 over 10 years. times. But not for 5 years so a bit out of date. Drop me a line nearer the date.

Philip IS a good city.

Aye, went to Philly for a couple of days a few years ago. Absolutely loved the place and have always wanted to spend some more time there.

The olympics... cancel 'em

why risk gathering half a million people in Brazil so that they can be bitten by mosquitos and then spread the Zika virus across the entire world by punters going home?

after all - it's only a couple of weeks of watching people running about and jumping over things... :conf:

Nope, it's about big money and big business. The sport is almost incidental.

Yes, all those lifetimes spent putting the endless hours in down at the track and in the pool.

You know that bridge that they're building next to Barton Bridge? Well, apparently it's collapsed

This is the sort of thing that I'd normally associate with Brazil or Pakistan!

The scientific evidence currently indicates that it arrived before the World Cup but was only detected and recognised after the World Cup.

The scientific evidence currently indicates that it arrived before the World Cup but was only detected and recognised after the World Cup, so it didn't affect the revenue stream.
