Re: The athletics/running thread
Stay away from road running. Stick to the lower impact trails and the fells and you can sack all that gait analysis gubbins off. Run in what you feel comfortable in. Sorted!thebish wrote:i did the couuch to 5k a few years ago - and was regularly running 5k (3 times a week) - until my right knee started to be painful - and I jacked it in... (right knee is still sometimes painful when descending steep slopes or coming down long flights of steps...)
anyway - several people have told me it was probably all my fault for not going to one of those trainer-shops that does video-gair analysis - and that I was probably using the wrong trainers.. Now I am moving house to a flatter area I am toying with the idea of starting up again - and so i am thinking about this advice I have been given re. trainers and the wrong/right sort...
I also remember it being discussed on here..
but then i read stuff like this - from a bloke who sounds like he knows what he's talking about..
http://runnersconnect.net/running-injur ... -footwear/
so - who do I believe?
(I am also tempted NOT to do the what seems to me high-impact sport of running and do more cycling... which also benefits from a flatter area!)

Of course! But very few folk are capable of running up them. Power walk up then enjoy the descentthebish wrote:Harry Genshaw wrote:

No - nowt to see here other than a bit of a feet-up/rest - as in "If that dog hits your knee and fells you, you can still do the breakfast but don't have to run!"...

I'm not anti-dog. I love dogs. I'm anti untrained aggressive dogs and their feck* owners.

Same here. Now that I don't take running too seriously ill happily stop and say hello to a playful dog although I can see that's not everyone's cup of tea.Gary the Enfield wrote:Harry Genshaw wrote:it's the thought that counts! It's becoming worryingly anti dog this thread!

It's the ones who think it's the runner's fault for running on a busy public path if their dog goes for him.
You've reminded me actually GtE that I've got my cousin's beagle puppy to visit just up the road. I'll get a pic with it to impress women on Facebook. The dog world owes me one.

It was only a beagle. Man up! With your training you should be outrunning small yappy dogs by nowGary the Enfield wrote:Harry Genshaw wrote:it's the thought that counts! It's becoming worryingly anti dog this thread!

LE's only got himself to blame. To paraphrase another poster on here a bit "you shouldn't be running around in shorts around dogs. You skinny c*nt!

This wasn't small and yappy it was medium sized and barking! A beagle isn't a small dog.
Anyway I've had enough now. Sod off the lot of you.

Re: The athletics/running thread
Back to the gait analysis thing, I'd go to a podiatrist and you'll find out if you have any biomechanical issues. You may not need expensive orthotics at all but you can be a lot more confident of the shoe recommendation and you my get strengthening exercises to do.
Unless there's something wrong it should just be a one off expense.
I've worn orthotics since 14 because of my freaky feet but most runners I know don't.

Re: The athletics/running thread
Absolutely. No man alive is capable of continuously running up large hillsides for a sustained period and even on shorter hills like say, the Pike race, it's more economical for the leaders to power walk a short section than try and run it. Those races tend to be won by guys who are fast on the flat and fearless on the descentsthebish wrote:Harry Genshaw wrote:Of course! But very few folk are capable of running up them. Looking on here to see who's doing the Park Run tomorrow? No-one? I knew BP wouldn't as it's due to rain.
Off for a 10 miler tomorrow and looking forward to it.
