I was looking forward to the response to this, CH, but I guess I'll wait in vain ...

yes, Crazy - as I'm sure you are aware - a little poke at Dan in response to his announcement the previous day that he had finally sorted out his grammar and spelling problems! (not a serious correction - but then, you knew that!) 8)

For the record I am not bothered about people offering me advice on my spelling, just in the manner it is done. Tango(it seems) was just being helpful and in no way was insulting is his advice, had he of said "learn to spell you dum f**k" then that would of been offensive. Bish should continue to point out when spelling bees make a typo and Bruce should continue to think I said jizz. Only on The Wanderer could such a brilliant storm be kicked up over one misspelled word. Best forum ever!

I meant to mention this before, but summat ont' One Show's just reminded me. If Scotland does gain independence then supermarkets will have to treat them as a stand-alone export market and, being as they won't be being bailed out by us to create a stable UK marketplace the price of everything to the purchaser will go up. Haste ye back in-fecking-deed.

Do you think Alex Salmond will tell his people that or any of the many of facts that will see Scotland become poorer as a result of leaving Britain.

They should know that themselves, if they're taking the time to go and vote on a huge change in their country

It's clear The Salmon knows he's struggling. He's trying to goad Cameron into a 1:1 debate. That can only go tiward improving his chances ... not because he will have any winning lines but it'll be a case of "scoff at the toff".

I hope he and his advisors are not daft enough to agree.

I've just got back from Edinburgh after a very pissy rugby weekend with Scottish friends. I would say that, from the comments of locals that I met on the trip, that the SNP aren't going to win this one. I hope they don't.

Salmond IMO is a massive cock, but attempting to leave that to one side.

I hope Scotland votes no but if it doesn't I don't sign up to all this 'fcuk them over' talk. I'd hope an independent Scotland would prosper and we can have trade and movement and all that, and I think we should do all we can to help provided that, and this is the clincher, it isn't against the interests of the remaining Union. Those in charge couldn't do anything else.

Its all very well whinging about ownership of the pound, but its value comes from the political and economic authority of the union. You either share that authority and so that value, or you are independent of it, and so can't. Its not about fairness, it's just not possible. Scotland can have 'a' pound, but they cant have 'the' pound unless they give up economic sovereignty to a union which would in no way be bound to act in Scotland's interests.

Have I missed something, because it *seems* fecking obvious.

I don't think you're missing anything Pru.

Through my work I have got to know a lot of Scots people and they're great, by and large. I'm lucky enough to count a number of them as close friends. Most of them show a pantomime 'hatred' of the English, mainly in the sporting world but, when push comes to shove, it evaporates. There's a few not-rights who take it further but they are best ignored -and there's not-rights in all walks of life.

Having said that, Scots will always be Scottish when it suits and British when it suits, which is the essence of the currency debate. That snake oil salesman Salmond rubbished the pound and was all over the Euro until the arse fell out of the Euro. Cue massive u-turn.

The 'Yes' campaign will not be successful, in my opinion.

Unless I misunderstand it .... if they do vote for independence ;

The £ is more than symbolic. To keep it means they will not have control of exchange rates, economic policy, interest rates. That will impact tax and spending way more than they're being told.

If they are to be admitted to the EEC which, whatever posturing goes on, most would wish, they will need to be welcomed in by ALL 27 current members. Spain for sure and Belgium and maybe others will be scared to death of that.

However, let's say they DO join, as I understand it, all new entrants will have to commit to joining the Euro once they meet the required standings ... which is where the first argument returns.

Lots of the derogations currently enjoyed by the UK would not be repeatable.

Salmond is doing all her can to personalise the debate as he knows that's where he can make some progress. It's bizarre watching him & his play the insulted & hurt card all the time. Also their habit of denying white is white ... and that heads of the EEC, of the Bank of England, of the Treasury, don't know what they're talking about.

His poncing about saying how angry the Scottish people are about being bullied doesn't seem to translate to the real attitudes being shown. The only 'hurt and angry' people seem to be the ones who wanted to be hurt and angry.

If they do get independence and we kick them out of the sterling club then Salmond will have the perfect excuse when the new independent Scotland goes tits up, as it undoubtedly will - sterling or no sterling. The SNP is, and has always been, a shambles.

I'm more than happy for any of UK's countries to vote on their own independence. Should they choose to be independent, then they need to be...errrr...independent. So they should get their own currency and all that entails.
